And for the majority of the time, ‘its thing’ is generally quite poised and never less than watchable. Navigating this excellent smart TV offering and these mercifully brief set-up menus can be done using the Hisense remote control handset or the Roku mobile app.

Sound is provided by two downward-firing 'racetrack' (meaning: oval) drivers, each driven by eight watts of power. The Hisense Roku R50A7200GTUK is likely to be the cheapest 50in TV we’ll see on sale in the UK this year from a major manufacturer. Screen uniformity is fairly good, but towards the edges you can detect some mild backlight bleed and discoloration in Tenet. In My Feed, films and TV shows can be tracked, sending alerts when they pop up on streaming services.

You can’t expect fireworks in the design department when you’re paying this sort of money for a television. It promises a good-sized, punchy 4K HDR image and all the major apps and services you could need, without so much as an additional box or stick in sight.

The top, left and right bezels are very slim and smooth, while the broader strip along the bottom (which carries both ‘Hisense’ and ‘Roku TV’ logos) is equally well integrated. You might wish for a little more fun while watching big action movies, but you’ll be thanking your lucky stars every time you opt for more character driven dramas. There are no obvious areas of backlight bleed, and the Hisense manages to load black tones with a decent amount of detail, too. Cheers on Channel 4 is more consistent, so it seems to depend on the quality of the broadcast; the A7200G’s upscaler struggles to bridge that gap in a uniform way.The item must be securely packaged, preferably in the original packaging using the inserts supplied. While not a huge upgrade over the original in terms of picture or sound, the Hisense R50A7200GTUK Roku TV maintains its fantastic budget performance. That does at least mean there’s space for three HDMI inputs, though, all of which support 4K at 60Hz, and one of which supports eARC for lossless audio passthrough to a soundbar.

It draws edges with a steady hand, keeps picture-noise suppressed well (even in almost entirely dark scenes there’s next-to-no crushing of black tones and very little associated noise) and even has a proper crack at keeping motion smooth and convincing. Yes, the backlighting makes the chassis bulge somewhat and no, there’s no dynamic metadata HDR here – but despite this, and the asthmatic nature of the TV’s sound, there’s an awful lot of value on display. When the the first Roku TV in the form of the Hisense Roku B7120UK arrived, it instantly marked itself out as one of the best cheap TVs on the market. With enjoyable picture quality, lots of streaming features and free content, this is an affordable TV with a wide appeal. Simon Lucas is a freelance technology journalist and consultant, with particular emphasis on the audio/video aspects of home entertainment. The chassis is almost identical, so build quality is rather plastic – not surprising for a cheap TV. Low-res content looks soft, indistinct and smeary – and that’s before there’s been any on-screen movement. The grapes might come from the same fields, the fermentation process may be identical and the barrels alike, but the taste and quality still vary from season to season. Give it a fighting chance with the content you feed in and it’s capable of looking like a more expensive TV, and the user experience – thank you, Roku!

If you just purchased your Hisense TV and haven’t unpacked it yet, you’ll be able to find out whether it’s 4K by looking at the box.Only periodic struggles with motion-tracking, and pretty much constant sonic toil, lets the side down. An extension lead does not always supply the TV with sufficient power, so the TV may not be able to turn on fully if connected this way. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and refers to contrast (or difference) between the brightest and darkest parts of an image.
