However, it only grew in popularity towards the end of the year, then went viral in January as the world woke up to its charms. In fact, it proved so successful that The New York Times bought Wordle for a seven-figure sum in early February and the game is now part of NYT Games. Do you love playing Wordle? Do you wish you could do more than one puzzle a day? If you do, then you will love this collection of 500 offline Wordle puzzles to do anytime, anywhere. Every word you enter must be in the word list. There are more than 10,000 words in this list, but only 2,309 (at the time of writing) are answers to a specific puzzle Murdle is a high-speed game of Clue that tortures your brain in the most enjoyable way. " ― Mindy Quigley, author of Six Feet Deep Dish and Ashes to Ashes, Crust to Crust If you delve into the HTML code in Wordle, you can see every answer and the game's starting date, and by this measure the first game was on June 19, 2021. The first puzzle — #0, not #1 — was CIGAR. On Wordle's first birthday, we came up with a list of 5 ways it needsd to improve to keep us playing for the foreseeable future. What are the Wordle rules?

World of Books also buys directly from charities, taking the titles they don’t want or haven’t got space for. So as well as preventing the destruction of perfectly good books, our customers are helping to support good causes too. Cheap Books, Fantastic Choice Wordle was created by developer Josh Wardle, a guy who you may have come across before; he was also the man behind the Reddit projects The Buttonand Place, each of which were similarly brilliant — and brilliantly simple — experiments in internet behavior. Wordle can only be completed once each day. That's right — no three-hour time-wasting Wordle sessions while you're supposed to be working. The game resets at midnight each day, so if you're really eager you can stay up and complete it while everyone else is asleep. And correct, in 4/6 moves. Which is about average, it seems. Why does Wordle sometimes have two answers? But even without that, I doubt it would have taken too long. Not only is SOLID a very well-known word, but four of its letters are amongst the ten most common in the game. Wordle officially launched in October 2021, but actually started in June of that year and celebrated its first birthday on June 19, 2022. (You can read my thoughts on the 5 things Wordle needs to improve if it's to keep us playing for its third year.) Murdle is perfect for the armchair detective. With a mystery story, a challenging puzzle, and just enough clues, you can be your new favorite sleuth.” ― Dianne Freeman, author of the award-winning Countess of Harleigh mystery series Of course the move to the New York Times has led some people to fear that it will be changed from what made it so special, but thus far at least those fears appear to be unfounded. If a letter is in the correct place, it turns green. If it's in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the word at all, it turns gray.

Finally, try out possibilities. So long as you don't press 'Enter' you can try possible answers to see how they look on screen. Put in likely letters plus any you know are definitely in the word, then mentally change one to the other available options. This technique has worked for me multiple times, and it's particularly helpful when the word in question is not an obvious one (like FJORD or ISLET).Other Wordle alternatives to try are the ultra-stressful (but very good) Squabble and the soccer-themed, Who Are Ya?. We also like the geography-based Wordle clone Worldle, the Star Wars-themed SWordle and the math-based Mathler. Wordle doesn't have many features as such, but there is a dark mode — and a hard mode. Hard mode forces you to play any correct letters on subsequent guesses — so if you have a green S at the start, you'd have to keep playing S at the start from then on. And if you have a yellow R in the word, all subsequent guesses would have to include R somewhere too. Secondly, think about combinations, especially at the start and end. Some options are far more common than others — for instance, SH, ST, CR and CH all feature frequently.

As regular readers will know, on my second turn I try to fit as many of the next most common characters around whatever I've already confirmed. So ideally, I was looking to get in any three of 'L', 'I', 'S', 'N' and 'C' to sit alongside 'A' and 'T'. You'll hear a lot about 'start words' in Wordle, because they are key to getting a good score. Not everyone uses one, but the basic theory is that if you choose a statistically optimum word you'll narrow down the options right from the first guess.

That meant that SAINT felt like a terrific move, and it was. 'A' and 'N' turned green and I ruled out 'T' in a second position. That meant the word had to be TA?N? given ?ATN? isn't pronouncable. Wordle isn't massively different to plenty of word games available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, but it displays a refreshing attitude to you, your time and your money. Without one, you'll be scrabbling around in the dark trying (and possibly failing) to find the right five letters (or possibly fewer) out of the 26 possibles. But clever people (not me) have done the math and identified the best start words based on both frequency in English and frequency among Wordle answers. So use them!
