Thanks for that very interesting bit of info - how on earth did you know that? I was wondering about the origin of the word delf, it sounds a bit Dutch but apparently it's an Old English word meaning a quarry. Could it have stayed in the folk memory from Old English/Viking times? Posted by Keith on 28/01/2013 This was the hope of the wildlife rehabilitation center, Kids Saving The Rainforest, when they installed more than 130 rope bridges in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area in Costa Rica in 2000. The rope bridges consist of a two-inch nylon rope tied from one tree on one side of the road to another tree on the other side. They were originally designed for the endangered “titi monkey” as the locals call the grey-crowned Central American squirrel monkey ( Saimiri oerstedii citrinellus). One day we were fortunate enough to see a whole troop of squirrel monkeys using one of the rope bridges. This sub-species of monkey, the Central American grey-crowned squirrel monkey, can only be found Manuel Antonio and the surrounding areas. The field of road ecology has expanded in recent years, but there is much that we still don’t completely understand. For example, the effects of roads for some species can be felt as much as 250-1000 meters away from the road’s edge (Eigenbrod et al. 2009). Parbat getting 'tallest and longest' bridge at home". myRepublica. 6 January 2020 . Retrieved 1 May 2021. Just to the east of Kingsway Bridge and next to the railway line there is/was a small rubbish dump which we called the "delf". There is a path to it between the allotments. Curious as to why it was so called. Anybody know? Posted by Corby on 28/01/2013 Now when you adjust the tension of the hand and foot ropes with this pull rope, the mechanical advantage is greatly increased. Secure the entire configuration with two Half Hitches cinched up against one of the rings. This short commentary is one part surmise and three parts observation. It’s composed of a series of events with a predictable outcome. Except to those familiar with Scout Pioneering, and Scout competitions, the whole scenario will appear obscure. But to the Scouts involved, it’s far from obscure. On the contrary, whenever something like this happens, it’s downright confusing, and without being melodramatic, maybe a little traumatic too. No real names are used in this account, and no fingers are being pointed at any individuals. The characters in stories like this are always well-intentioned and without malice. There are no wrongdoers involved… just victims. The differences between these two curves were a question of importance in the 17th century, worked on by Isaac Newton. [3] The solution was found in 1691, by Gottfried Leibniz, Christiaan Huygens, and Johann Bernoulli who derived the equation in response to a challenge by Jakob Bernoulli. [4] Their solutions were published in the Acta Eruditorum for June 1691. [5] [6]

Swinefleet Ferry was important too. Its great tragedy was on the 21st September, 1735 when, as Whitgift parish register tells us "The ferry boat at Swinefleet was overset with 15 persons on it, 14 of whom miserably perished in ye river". Since the development of Goole much the most important of these ferries was that to Booth - the Booth Ferry. Originally it belonged to the Bishop of Durham as Lord of Howden and those who ran it leased it from the reigning Bishop. In the tidying up of episcopal estates that took place after 1836, rather oddly, it came to belong to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Enter “Ned”: Without knowing any better, Ned, a well-meaning Scouting volunteer, reasons quite innocently the Diagonal Lashing should be used whenever Scouts join two poles that cross each other at less than a perpendicular angle. So from this viewpoint, which, because of its name, appears logical, Ned concludes Scouts should use Diagonal Lashings when making an A-frame. After all, the angles formed by the poles are less than 90º. Without any real, hands on exposure to pioneering, he’s not familiar with the fact the lashing is reserved for springing two poles together when they cross but don’t touch. To him, his assumption about the lashing is obvious. He proceeds to write up a description of a Scouting activity featuring his misunderstanding about the use of Diagonal Lashings. Since he’s an intelligent, well-respected Scouter… somehow, it get’s printed, and then again reprinted, in official BSA publications. Are these kinds of scenarios rare at Scout skill events? The answer is, no. They take place at Boy Scout summer camps, district and council camporees, and OA conclaves. Scouts have been penalized, disqualified, and even politely insulted by facilitators who base their event’s rules on material that contradicts what some may have adopted from other official publications. This is a sad state of affairs. Scouts become frustrated, angry, and disillusioned—feelings that shouldn’t obtain at a Scouting event.Robert Birkby is author of three editions of The Boy Scout Handbook , two editions of the BSA’s Fieldbook and the newest edition of the Conservation Handbook . Before erecting the double A-frames, build a 3-2-1 anchor, or a log and stake anchor, 10 feet from where the A-frames will be erected (see figure 141).
