Description

If the patio has gaps in between each slab and the water can drain through it you won’t need to drill 15mm cores into and fill with pea shingle. If your concrete is stable and relatively flat then, in most cases, it will be fine to proceed with the installation. You’ll need the concrete to be in a reasonable condition; you can have the best artificial grass money can buy, but the secret to long-lasting artificial grass is to lay it on a solid foundation. Make no mistake: This installation is not an easy process. You are going to need a range of materials and garden tools.

This can also cause the concrete in your garden to become slippery, again making it dangerous to walk on.

I remember watching those garden DIY programmes many years ago and there was always some decking added to the garden design. People now find that the decking layed all those years ago is starting to look grubby and uninviting.

You just need to use your common sense when assessing whether to install artificial grass on concrete, and remember that it will need to be safe to walk on. If you’ve followed the steps above carefully, you will now have an artificial lawn that will last you up to 20 years, or even more.

If you were to install your fake grass directly on top of concrete, once it lay flat it would mirror the undulations in the surface below. If this is the case, it is strongly advised that you break out the existing concrete and follow the procedure for a typical artificial grass installation. It depends on where you’re installing it. For typical installations, you can secure the padding to the perimeter edging using adhesive or nails. Make sure to lay it on a proper sub-base. In addition, secure any joins with duct tape or galvanized U-pins.It is very important that you avoid gluing directly onto the underlay, as this can shift around. Instead, lay down joining tape and glue the panels onto that. Allow time to dry. Step 6: Trim the Artificial Grass, and Secure It at the Edges Every artificial grass has a very slight pile direction and this step should be done by brushing into the pile, which will lift the fibres. Constructed from recycled foam chunks, our performance fake grass underlay is specifically designed for use with your new turf, providing an extra layer of spongy comfort.

Before sending this message, I lifted a slab and found a hard layer which seems like a sand and cement mortar mix. I poured water in this area and it didn’t really soak away and took a long time to clear. I then used a 8mm drill bit (biggest I had) to drill a hole which would only go down as far as 60mm deep. The drill bit came out with what looked like sand on it. I poured some water in this hole and it didn’t drain well. Therefore, does this mean the idea of installing grass on top of the current slabs whilst drilling some holes for drainage won’t work? I cannot fathom removing all the slabs and preparing the sub base again due to the work and cost involved. However, most installers do a substandard job, making it hard to safely and efficiently install the artificial lawn. For instance, if they use the wrong drainage aggregates and fail to dig the proper soil depth and other factors, it will be hard to prevent flooding in the artificial grass. When you are installing artificial grass on concrete, things look a bit different. For starters, the surface underneath is hard, and you will also have to take care of drainage. If you have any pets in your home, it is important to think about how they are going to interact with the artificial grass too. Poor drainage can result in your surrounding flowerbeds being flooded, meaning your plants may drown. For standard artificial lawn installations, for example replacing an existing lawn, installing a foam underlay is not essential. Installing this underlay helps hide any undulations in the existing surface, for a smooth, flawless finish in your outdoor space. We recommend that you lay the grass with the leaning direction of the pile towards your house or main area. This is going to give off a more natural look to your installation.
