I looked down at what I was wearing: a tan cardigan went over my short-sleeved light pink button-up shirt that was miraculously missing wrinkles—thank goodness—and dark brown work pants. It was something I'd wear to one of my old jobs. I looked closer to make sure that my clothes weren't stained. I adore Iris and Dex; I'm such a softie when it comes to a grumpy alpha male who falls hard and fast. Iris is such a strong character too, so she can put Dex in his place, with his grumpy self. Mayhem was smoky and smelled faintly of piss and not so faintly of beer. The place was old, with stained bars and scuffed hardwood floors that had seen better decades. Pool tables were set up on the far side of the bar that smelled like... yep, that was pot. I was pretty sure—only about ninety-nine percent sure—smoking was illegal inside but I definitely wasn't going to complain to the abundance of tattooed and leather-vested men that mobbed the floor. There was no real angst in their relationship once it had grown to a point of being more than friends....any conflict was from outside their relationship...mainly Iris's deadbeat dad and his issues causing them trouble.

Good pacing: Her books are well-paced, and the storylines develop gradually, reaching a satisfying conclusion. Dex and Iris make a guest appearance in Kulti which made me select this as my next read as I really wanted to know more about them. That being said, this book does have one of the big romance genre clichés that will drive some readers crazy. Iris is the quintessential naïve, good girl virgin. Dex is anything but virgin-like. He's the stereotypical manwhore that has slept around with a large part of Austin's female population without discrimination. This isn't really a problem for me, but I thought I'd mention it because I know it is something that many readers can't stand. This couple does have a somewhat slow buildup. They don't get intimate until the last half of the book. I didn't really mind that because the author didn't bore with unnecessary details. For an MC book, this book doesn't have much angst, and again I'm totally ok with that. The first book, Lingus, has an exciting plot. I have never seen another book. We follow a girl, Kat Berger, who goes to an adult convention because she loves it. She meets a guy who makes her laugh, feels very comfortable, and instantly connects with her.

He lowered his mouth right next to my ear, his teeth nipping at my lobe before he whispered, "Love you." So having Sonny around, worrying about his friends getting too close or giving me looks that he didn't like, was strangely nice. Well.... In case you were wondering, I got my money's worth on this book!!! It was long, not too long, loved the characters. Oh friggin’ hell. I could feel it. Feel that magical explosion of fireworks and rainbows in my toes. Despite their differences, Iris and Dex find themselves attracted to each other. Dex tries to stay away from Ritz out of loyalty to her brother. She tries to deny her attraction to him because she knows that he is nothing but trouble.

Well since I'm not masochistic it was a downright disgusting and painful read, but I really wanted to rate it so I barreled through. It is rare I like the heroine as much as the hero in a book, but I really liked Iris, with her insults and "That's what she said" jokes and high fives. There was just something very endearing about her. Screw it. What was the worse that was going to happen? I'd grown up around a felon. A biker. I'd loved that felon biker for longer than he'd deserved. This story was soooo good. This is my second Mariana Zapata book and this is even better than the first one. Iris is so cute, endearing and her internal rants are just hilarious. Passers by probably thought I was a lunatic for laughing out load whilst walking my dog listening to the audio book. The narration was great, but we only get Iris pov. Even so listing to it whilst reading made a good story even better.

However, once it settles and who was who, what connected them and the history of the characters made itself known, it just flowed and I started to really enjoy it. What hit me immediately inside was all the natural light in the place. The orange-yellow light streaming in set off the dozens of framed newspaper and magazine articles mounted on the tinted blue wall. One magazine article immediately caught my attention with its glassy, red font proclaiming “Ink of the Year.” When Dex told her to button up her cardigan because she was showing a little to much collarbone(?), I wanted to reach into the book a slap him silly. Iris already dress like a sixty year old librarian. Why not just demand that she wear a burka? This e-book is a work of fiction. While reference might be made to actual historical events or existing locations, the names, characters, places and incidents are either the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, events, or locales is entirely coincidental. It's also one of those books where she hates him, he acts like an asshole, sexual tension and then floodgates of mushy love. Sonny had dragged me to the bar by sheer manipulation. I'd just gotten to Austin not even two hours before.
