The Fine Art of Literary Fist-Fighting offers an insightful overview of the recent history of creative nonfiction and the struggles that early practitioners faced in legitimizing the genre. I don't care if that's how this review/essay is viewed though, because I didn't choose the book as the winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize: Kwame Dawes picked it (along with the team of readers and editors who helped select the finalists, of course).

Although Follett is best known for his epic Kingsbridge Series and thrillers such as Eye of the Needle, this non-fiction piece is as tense and engaging as much of his fiction. Hoffman has spent a large part of his life trying to show to us in a way that forces us to remember that all the floors we walk on (hardwood, tile, and carpet), the pipes (copper and PVC) that bring water to our faucets and toilets (and I guess bidets if you're fancy), the ducts and vents that guide heat and cool air into our rooms, were installed by people made up of the same stuff as you and me. An excellent and extraordinarily well-written collection of short stories about blue collar work in the Midwest (often Michigan). Hardcover, new in a near fine dust jacket that has a TINY bit of wear to a small area of its front panel. The volume also features a showdown between Iron Fist and Steel Serpent, the villain referenced all the way back in Marvel's Daredevil Season 1 who may or may not be making an appearance in the Netflix series.This book will lead you to question how well we can ever really know someone, while also teaching you much about Britain’s involvement in the Cold War and the history of the post-war world. If you are looking for a suspenseful non-fiction book on British history that reads like a novel and you won’t want to put down, this is the book for you. Budding journalists and students of creative writing will find plenty of red meat in Gutkind’s pages.
