Description

The Nevermoor series meets Hotel Transylvania in this dazzling debut middle grade adventure set in a world of talking spiders, living forests, and haunted castles about a vampire girl who wants to fit in but first must defeat an evil ghost. A little horror, a little gore, adventure, tons of humor, and imagination pure make this into a read to get lost in and wish it continued without an end. While in mist form, the vampire can’t take any actions, speak, or manipulate objects. It is weightless, has a flying speed of 20 feet, can hover, and can enter a hostile creature’s space and stop there. In addition, if air can pass through a space, the mist can do so without squeezing, and it can’t pass through water. It has advantage on Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution saving throws, and it is immune to all nonmagical damage, except the damage it takes from sunlight. The winners of the Diverse Book Awards 2023 have been announced, with one winner from each of the four categories announced: Picture book, Children...

Dapo Adeola, Tracy Darnton, Joseph Coelho and Chitra Soundar are among the 19 authors and illustrators longlisted for the Inclusive Books for Child... After one hundred years of being a vampire, it’s time for Eleonora to have her Birthnight. Since Leo’s last rite of passage, her Grimwalk, ended with her losing her right leg and a good deal of her confidence, she’s hoping to redeem herself in the eyes of her mother, the fearsome Lady Sieglinde. All Leo has to do is hunt down and kill her first prey, and she already has the perfect plan. After all, who will miss an orphan from the bleak St. Frieda’s Home for Unfortunate Children? Leo’s eyes felt hot. The electric charge in the air dissipated, as did the phantom sound of wings. Left behind was a heavy feeling in the pit of her stomach. He come on moonlight rays as elemental dust, as again Jonathan saw those sisters in the castle of Dracula. He become so small, we ourselves saw Miss Lucy, ere she was at peace, slip through a hairbreadth space at the tomb door. He can, when once he find his way, come out from anything or into anything, no matter how close it be bound or even fused up with fire, solder you call it. He can see in the dark, no small power this, in a world which is one half shut from the light. Ah, but hear me through. Mum is preparing to leave for an important Vampiric Council meeting and tells Leo that no Motteberg has ever failed their first bite and she doesn’t believe Leo will either. So no pressure!

Age range(s)

I would recommend this book to kids of 8-10 years old because it is a book which has some frightening bits and some comedy bits. If you like "How to Train Your Dragon" this has a similar mix of mythical creatures and illustrations. While it has 0 hit points in mist form, it can’t revert to its vampire form, and it must reach its resting place within 2 hours or be destroyed. Once in its resting place, it reverts to its vampire form. It is then paralyzed until it regains at least 1 hit point. After spending 1 hour in its resting place with 0 hit points, it regains 1 hit point. Nocturnal - The sun presents no real danger, only weakening their supernatural abilities. As a result, they prefer to hunt at night and sleep in the day. [1] Elizabeth's "children" even sleep in coffins, though this may merely be an affectation. Elizabeth, by her own admission, prefers to sleep with the curtains drawn to dim the light.

Despite her sympathy for Lord Ayman—or what was left of him—Leo couldn’t help but feel sorry for herself too. Was Sieglinde really going to miss Leo’s special night?

Leonora and Minna are pleased their battle with the Orphan Master is over and they both survived - just. Now best friends after going through something so awful, they now hang out together through reflective surfaces or even in Leo's family castle. A vampire and a ghost being friends is unheard of. It makes no sense. The two factions have despised one another for all eternity. But . . . Leo the vampire and Minna the ghost have battled together side-by-side, they're sisters-in-arms, they're best friends, and they'll have to work together to vanquish a new, deadly threat. Leo is, again, the star of the book. She's just brilliant, both brave and uncertain, torn between loyalty to her evil family and doing the right thing, needing support but rankling against her parents and her butler, another brilliant supporting character. Seeing Leo having to negotiate new trials and pressures and doing everything she can to live up to everybody's expectations for her is fascinating. This was the sort of door that was bound to open with a foreboding creak—and, sure enough, its rusty hinges gave a bitten-off squeal when the girl inched it open. She hesitated for a moment, listening intently. Higher Beings - The afficated cannot hurt or kill higher beings, such as Demons, Angels, The Anti-Christ and Deities.

Her ‘victim’ is anything but. Minna is an orphan all right, but she has her own plans for the evening, thank you very much! Leo’s arrival ruins Minna’s plan and what results is a smouldering ruin and two very angry ghosts! The branch of wild rose on his coffin keep him that he move not from it, a sacred bullet fired into the coffin kill him so that he be true dead, and as for the stake through him, we know already of its peace, or the cut off head that giveth rest. We have seen it with our eyes. However, sometimes I felt like this book did not engage me all of the time but the ending made up for it. Ability Enhancement (Possibly) - The afflicted are implied to have the ability to increase their abilities by consuming the blood of another supernatural creature. After drinking the blood of Queenie, a Voodoo witch, Ramona Royale claimed to feel "bears running through (her) veins". The exact mechanics of this ability are still unknown.Fans of fast-paced, well-written gothic romps will devour Rules for Vampires.' Phil Earle, bestselling author of When the Sky Falls Overall, "Rules for Vampires" is an interesting book, which would appeal to children who like books that are a bit scary. If you like "How to Train Your Dragon" this has a similar mix of mythical creatures and illustrations. Physical Trauma - Physical injuries will cause the afflicted pain and, if severe enough, death. Due to their superiority over humans in strength, speed and senses, it is best for a human to attempt to kill an afflicted by using the tactic of surprise against them; although Elizabeth could have easily killed John Lowe, she did not expect to be greeted by him in her suite's elevator and was shot to death before she could properly defend herself. [3] [4] [5] [8] [10] Turning her face away, Leo fixed her gaze on the dancing flame of the candle. Her chest felt tight.
