To be honest, it felt like a bit too much inspiration had been taken from the ACOTAR story. I loved ACOTAR, but I do wish this had been a bit more original. I hate to give this author a low rating because I tip my hat to her for doing the thing she loves and putting it out into the world. That’s amazing. Broken Lies is the fifth book in the Lily’s House series. The series follows the life of Lily, a young woman who rents a house from her grandparents. The series is set in the fictional town of Waterford, Connecticut.

Except this world, as fantastical as it is, never quite cements itself as a truly realized place. And I think a lot of that has to do with the language choices our characters make. Half of the time, they speak as colloquially as we do, and the other half they’re trying to speak in that fantasy way - you know what I mean. Make up your mind! The exposition could’ve been filled with more description of the world and of the characters. Even now, having read the whole thing, I only vaguely know what some of the characters look like. Do not ask me for an accurate rendering of the setting. Another let down from the BookTok community 😪. This book was really hyped up on Booktok and honestly I was pretty excited as the story seemed like it would be pretty interesting, but I was sorely wrong. It definitely had moments and visuals that were ripped straight from other popular books of this genre (I saw another review that described this book as a “watered down ACOTAR”, and they’re not wrong), but there was enough original content that I kept reading. This book just wasn’t for me, sadly. I was excited when i saw it on booktok, and there were a few parts of this book where I thought, “wow, this could be redeemable!” and it just wasn’t, in my opinion. The plot felt rushed and almost predictable at some points, and I felt confused at various parts.

She and Marty often taunt and abuse each other when they meet, and often engage in angry sex. Lauren Lapkus as Benita Spire, part of Jeanie's new pod. She leaked info to the press that led to the demise of Galweather under The Rainmaker. There were many lines of dialogue in which I felt the writing wasn’t true to the character and it took me out of the story. When Mal says things like “it was so messed up” it made me question his age, his origins, the time period of this story and the relationship this story had to the real world. It didn’t feel like a phrase his character would use even if he was familiar with it. Language like that made it hard to distinguish the age difference between even characters like Mal and his mother. And it really, really needs an editor, or even just a friend with a slightly better grasp of vocabulary. At least then they could save it from simple mistakes like using the wrong words “vile rose in my throat” where it should be bile, “limps” where it should be limbs. I don’t know if an editor could save it from some of the really weird word choices and descriptions though. “Bench like structure” -what makes it not a bench? Just say there is a bench!
