Description

Upon his return, Church secured the services of a new architect, Calvert Vaux, and began designing the new house in earnest. Olana's collection includes architectural sketches by both Vaux and Church that illustrate the collaborative relationship the two had during the home's design. Construction began in 1870, and Frederic, Isabel, Frederic Joseph, Theodore, Louis and Downie moved into the second floor of the unfinished house in 1872. Church continued his development of the landscape as well, taking advantage of the new views afforded by the higher elevation property. Church would continue to make changes and improvements to both the home and landscape throughout most of his life. Martin originally cited Herrmann's score for Fahrenheit 451, [33] [48] but this was a mistake as the film was not released until several months after the recording of "Eleanor Rigby". The family's bucolic life at Olana was forever changed in March, 1865, with the deaths of the children from diphtheria. [9] Grieving from this, the greatest emotional blow of their lives, the parents traveled with sympathetic friends to Jamaica for four months, then to a retreat in Vermont. Late in 1865, the couple returned to Cosy Cottage to start anew. [10] Frederic Joseph Church was born in autumn 1866, the first of three sons and a daughter that were raised to adulthood at Olana. As one of the most prominent members of the famed Hudson River School, the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains were two of the subjects that most impacted the art of Frederic Church, so it’s no wonder that he desired to see his artistic inspiration from his home. The views from Olana are said to have inspired Church. The park features roughly five miles of trails that offer great views of the incredible landscape that Frederic Church fell in love with. You can even walk around the 10-acre lake that Church created and view his original home on the property, Cozy Cottage.

Kneubuhl was working on "Ola Na Iwi" before the theft -- "unauthorized removal" if you prefer -- of the two ka'ai (woven caskets containing human remains) from Bishop Museum in 1994. Rather than getting into the unique history of the ka'ai, which were placed in the museum's keeping by Prince Kuhio, she wrote a straightforward indictment of 19th-century anthropologists and grave robbers.Waikalua Loko I’a, Kāne‘ohe, O‘ahu, received a Preservation Commendation Award at the 2011 Preservation Honor Awards. Recognition went to Mr. Herb Lee, Jr.; Mr. Clyde Namaru and the Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society. While there are many cultures that influenced Church’s design of Olana, Middle Eastern elements are clearly present in the house’s design and aesthetic. This gives that house a unique look that you won’t find elsewhere in New York. Church used windows to frame spectacular views. Interestingly, nearly all of the furniture and decorations in the home were owned by Church and much of it sits in the same place where it was when he lived here.
