Out of the pair, the front Lezyne Super Drive 1600XXL light is definitely the star of the show. With 1600 lumens of output, the beam quality of the Super Drive light is excellent, completely illuminating unlit roads. Thanks to the wide-angle pattern, I found that the Super Drive lit up everything in my peripheral vision, not just the direct road ahead, making me feel much safer riding in the dark. The front light has seven setting options, with the Femto option able to run for up to 148 hours, meaning I rarely found myself worrying about forgetting to charge it. When it comes to charging, the rear KTV light features a handy built-in USB which takes away the need for a charging wire which was a really handy feature – it would be great if this was carried out to the front Super Drive light too. PNW has been careful not to make them too baggy. With some shorts, their gross bagginess can leave a heft of material to flap about but the Shuttle strikes a great balance between super fitting, and baggy. This leaves enough room and fabric to move around in, without surplus ripe for snagging on foliage, or the nose of your saddle.

Again, this is a product you’re more likely to buy if your commute is long or if you’re a cyclist in your spare time. Single-figure prices are, understandably, few and far between in the world of cycling garments, but these budget Tenn Mens Coolflo 8 Panel Padded Cycling Shorts come very highly rated by users. It’s certainly no bad thing in a sport that can sometimes feel inaccessible to those on a budget, and whether they’re an entry-level pair or a spare, they’re sure to perform admirably. From one of the most revered brands in cycling attire, the Castelli Cycling Entrata Bib Shorts offer superb value for money. These shorts are a bit more rugged than some of Castelli’s race-oriented clothing, making them perfect for daily commutes. The ZOANO shorts have a button closure and are constructed mainly from breathable polyester. They are stitched with flat seams to avoid discomfort against the skin. The liner uses silicon leg bands to keep the material in place when cycling. It’s always possible you’ll wear your shorts in the dark. It might be a balmy summer’s night, or maybe you’ll pair them with leg warmers for cooler night-time commutes. Either way, reflective details help you stay visible to motorists. Commuter Shorts FAQs When it comes to trousers for cycling commuters, you again have a great variety to choose from. Do you want the most practical, the most fashionable, or the most snug fit? Lastly, let’s not forget waterproof shoes, because no commuter wants their feet to end up drenched and freezing from navigating countless puddles or an ungodly downpour on their way to work.

Having launched in 2020, Vaela are still relatively new to the cycling market. Founder Jo Bole started the company after years of bad clothing for women who commuted, and found the only answer to this problem was to make her own. Despite its young age, the brand has made big strides towards making commuter clothing for women that work both on and off the bike – needing no change of clothes when you arrive at your destination. Focusing on aesthetics and sustainability, the brand's pieces are made to be investments that’ll commute with you for a long time. You’ll also want some padding on the palms and possibly the thumb, to cushion yourself from jolts and improve comfort. It can be made from foam or gel inserts, and will make a big difference. Finally, look for some grip on the palms, index finger and thumb, particularly if you’re riding off-road.

These Lezyne lights have a long battery life, offer great visibility and are both waterproof and durable, keeping you seen while riding in the dark.

So choosing some good winter gloves for cycling is an absolute must. The good news is that things have never been better — there are so many good mitts on the market, that’ll keep your fingers warm, dry and happy. Some can even work with your smartphone, should you wish. Other designs don’t have individual fingers, but adopt a ‘lobster claw’ approach, grouping fingers together for extra toastiness. Despite their good off-the-bike aesthetics, these shorts also perform superbly in the saddle. The padded liner finds the right position quite naturally and offers just enough cushioning and comfort. That in itself is a valuable little detail, because with shorts that look this smart, you don't really want to feel like you've got a nappy on underneath. Both work really well in controlling your core temperature but merino often gets the nod when it comes to odor control. Should your office or place of business not have shower facilities, then this is something to consider. If you want some with the much-coveted merino wool, these Album Leo shirts are a fantastic choice – they’re extremely stylish, mobile and flexible, with reflective detailing around the cuffs, too.

dhb Flashlight Men's Waist Shorts

Bib shorts are far from being a necessity, but they may be more comfortable around the waist and aid diaphragmatic breathing. They also keep the shorts hoisted up and the pad in place. Here, we’re bringing together all of the commuting buying guides that we currently have on Discerning Cyclist, so that you can gear up for your own ride with the freshest and most cycling-friendly clobber. Summer commuting is a great time to take advantage of the extended hours of daylight, riding the long way home and exploring new roads. If you do this, you'll want to bring your trusty vest again, just in case the temperatures drop.
