I haven't read the John Puller series but my husband is a fan and he was excited to see the crossover of worlds. I had the impression from previous books that there would be a conclusion to the Mercy story soon and perhaps a new opening for Atlee where she fades with her sister into the sunset, but the rushed ending here felt like the author had a 'Ka-ching' moment and has spun the story out for at least another episode, altogether unsatisfying as this character's story arc was, I felt, coming to a natural end. David Baldacci is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across America. Currently on leave until she can sort out her personal demons, Atlee is joined by colleague and close friend, Carol Blum.

Although both are top notch investigators and can quickly track down leads, there’s something very untoward going on when it comes to the extended Vincenzo family. In the course of investigating such leads, Agent Pine crosses paths with an Army CID officer simultaneously pursuing the same lead in an unrelated case.The problem is, as they go along, the number of unexpected deaths starts to grow - often as a direct result of talking to the pair. David Baldacci is a master of the action thriller and fans of the genre will love this high octane story.

Murder and political corruption are at the center of this mystery, and this time in addition to her intrepid FBI assistant Carol Blum she has John Puller as a partner in tracking down these evil people. Here she continues the pursuit of her missing twin sister Mercy, missing since they were 6 years old.

So not only is this my first Atlee Pine read, it’s my first novel by David Baldacci and boy I may be late to the party but glad I got there. Clues now lead her and her assistant Carol Blum to Trenton, New Jersey, to talk to the grandson of the man Atlee believes took her sister. With the truth out there, both Puller and Pine will have to watch themselves and step carefully, or fear never seeing daylight again.
