So I accept myself as unique, but others who know less about Autism and know less about me come to these assumptions that I’m weird or I’m a malodiversary. Andre Aciman I’ve been writing a fair amount of training material recently, for myself and for several other organisations and it’s had me questioning what I want people to take away from them. This sticking out is ultimately announcing yourself to the herd – identifying that you are currently not part of it, but want to be if the terms are right. We’re scared, a deep rooted fear that crawls up the back of our necks and makes our crocodile brains snap and snarl. Identity can be defined as the way a person understands and views him or herself, and is often viewed by others (Holland 2001).

I am different and I can accept myself as different very easily when difference isn’t viewed as a deficit. My life, I have seen and been confronted with narratives around Autism that are very deficit-focused.And here today, in these few minutes, I wanna try to unpack what self-acceptance can look like as a journey for Autistic individuals in a society that doesn’t really accept us. So there are aspects of diversity in our Human herd, of which some are accepted more than others and at the bottom of that list are the minorities, like Autistic people. It is discouraging, though, that I’ve had to do so much of this work on my own, that I’ve had to seek out so much on my own my strengths.

Autism, Identity and Me - Booktopia Autism, Identity and Me - Booktopia

Admitting to yourself and admitting to the world that you can’t keep up with it, that forcing yourself to live like everyone else is slowly poisoning you, is decaying you, dissolving your whole being with every step, is a huge deal, it’s the biggest deal. One staff member is said to have put a ribbon around a resident’s neck and ridden him “like a horse” while another gave a resident an onion when he asked for a biscuit then sent him to his room when he failed to eat it. Yet I’ve often been told that that’s weird and that I should push that to the side and instead strive for in-person socialising as though that’s the best and only way to find authentic belonging. The more we insist on being someone else outside of our identities, the more we expect others to do the same. There might be creatures with bigger teeth than us still wandering the seas and the plains that cause us problems, but ultimately we’re the kings of the hill, we’re the dominant species on the planet.
