I have made the Ruska dress and the Sade blouse and will now have to think about whether to choose the Saraste or Solina to make as my third project. His advice to leaders is to stop struggling to tame disruption and start welcoming , even embracing, it as a force that brings about innovation. Complete with stunning photography, clear illustrations and instructions, this book shows you how to create a coherent capsule wardrobe complete with a collection of 20 garments that are easy to make, wear and combine with each other. I've actually made three versions of the Ruska dress last year (but haven't yet got around to blogging them), so I'm pleased that I've got good use out of this book.

Breaking the Pattern is the first authentic dressmaking book that showcases the beauty and uniqueness of Scandinavian style. Designed for the trend-conscious, this book equips you with the tools to create a coherent capsule wardrobe – complete with an enticing collection of 20 timeless garments that are easy to make, wear and combine. Most times, this isn't too much of an issue and I usually add a cm to shoulder seams to compensate if the fit looks off. The Finnish sewing duo behind the dressmaking fashion label Named Clothing, Laura and Saara Huhta offer up an enticing selection of tops, dresses, skirts, and trousers for the modern seamstress. Some parts of the book have actual photos to complete steps that include somewhat crucial sewing skills (like setting in sleeves or installing an invisible zipper) that I feel like someone should know if they’re making these patterns to begin with.

a publicly-traded newspaper and magazine company based in Manhattan that published The Hill in Washington, and Dan's Papers in the Hamptons, among others. There seems to be a slit in all the patterns, but they’re easy enough to eliminate (not really my thing! Sizes for the patterns in the book come in 1-9, which caters to a size range of 88cm-124cm at the hips. I was concerned throughout the project that the dress would be too long and would maybe look like a bathrobe? The pattern was well-drafted though and the dress came out beautifully, but it just wasn’t for me, so I sold it to a friend so it can be worn and loved. While I didn’t complete that pledge, I did sew several of the items from that book including two Ruska knot dresses, a Ruska knot t-shirt, a Solina dress, the Halla coat, the Sade blouse and the Rae pants.

When I saw the previews I had my eye on the Ruska Knot Dress, the Solina Dress, and the Saraste shirt dress. I'm a teacher, a lifelong learner, a traveller, a maker, an adventurer and a 'want to do more' kind of gal.It was at this point the dress ended up in the wip box, as although I had adjusted the waist seam, the dress still was sitting oddly. His latest books are The Diet Detective's Count Down (Simon and Schuster, 2007), The Diet Detective's Calorie Bargain Bible (Simon and Schuster, 2008), The Diet Detective's Diet Starter Kit (Diversion, 2011), and The Diet Detective's All American Diet (Rodale, 2012). Some of this may have been linked to the fabric having stretch, but I don't think that was it really. Simply because I can’t quite think of wearing this to any event (in the pandemic-free future) where I wouldn’t have to eat, drink or visit the bathroom. The fact that the key for the sizes are not marked on the sheets themselves but only in the book can also be a bit annoying.

The patterns are in a range of sizes from UK sizes 8 to 20, with concise information on measuring yourself and finding the perfect fit. What I liked about this dress was the unusual diagonal stitching at the front and centre of the dress. First of all, I added 2 pockets, one zippered pocket on the outside of the bag, and a patch pocket on the inside. Projects: Nummi bag, Sade blouse and tunic; Rae pants; Utu skirt and pinafore; Ruska dress, T-shirt, tunic and knot dress; Solina dress, jumpsuit and top; Saraste blouse, shirt dress and top; Kaste cocktail dress and butterfly sleeve dress; Palo jeans; Halla coat.

I’ve always thought that this is something that makes this book less accessible for inexperienced sewists. Complete with stunning photography, clear illustrations and instructions, this book shows you how to create a coherent capsule wardrobe – complete with a collection of 20 garments that are easy to make, wear and combine with each other. Improve your sewing expertise as you work through the book, and use the six essential building blocks to choose, customise and adapt the designs to create a variety of beautiful clothes to fit your figure.
