Description

His play ‘Too Much Punch for Judy’, written in 1987, is one of the most performed contemporary plays in the UK. The character of Dan had to be removed from the play shortly before the first performance, which became the catalyst for what Mark describes as ‘the iconic idea from the production’. I was sitting in the same row as the people who were being re-created on stage and it was an unusual experience. Overwhelmingly the element that had most impact was the fact it's a true story, about a real person.

With three separate Lucian Freud exhibitions currently on, Graham Hooper took time to visit and here is his review of these contrasting shows. We also use different external services like Google Webfonts, Google Maps and external Video providers. His plays are extensively used in the drama curriculum in schools, he has been one of the playwrights recommended in the Edexcel GCSE drama syllabus for many years. This fast-paced, powerful and emotionally-charged play, tells the true story of what happened to Dan, the choices he made and the impact on his family and friends – all told in their own words, from tragedy to redemption.

Alex Colley is fantastic as Tim, Dan’s father, and his chemistry with Radford and Scott-Ward is truly believable. Perhaps this scene was built around the parting shot, the last time a loved one leaves the family home, a casual everyday gesture of slipping into a hoodie, forever after a sacred memory and the moments perhaps, when life stands still for those left behind.

The fact that Dan’s family shares their true story with Mark Wheeller and this theatre company, is generous and heartfelt – and by doing so they hope it will help others to understand what happened and to learn from this experience and how to avoid it. The title takes Dan’s joking last words to his mum, Fiona, before he left home for what turned out to be the last time: ‘I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die’. Here, he was sold a lethal dose of MDMA (the powdered form of ecstasy) after which he suffered multiple organ failure. Half Moon Theatre sits in the heart of Limehouse in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, spitting distance from the DLR and mainline station. Friends talk about Dan, telling us what he was like when they first met him and later when they knew him for a while.

He began his writing career as ‘one of us’: a Drama teacher, working collaboratively with his school and youth theatre groups to produce plays based on true stories. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

I have taught Drama for over 20 years now, and have lost count of how many plays I have directed, but the impact at the end of last night’s performance on both cast and audience was something I have never experienced in education. The first scenes depict the interviews Wheeller had with the people we meet in the play which is a fascinating way to frame the play, making it clear from the outset that it’s a verbatim play, but the character just leaves part way through with no explanation. Everyone loves Dan and at 16, he has plans, plenty of them – just losing his life isn’t one of them. A talented, creative and “lovely boy” with a passion for helping others who’s always on the side of the underdog. This book offers a unique and useful guide for teaching/studying this play and includes a detailed scheme of work for teachers using the play as a set text in the EDUQAS GCSE Drama examination.
