Description

In general, aim for equal parts of the above materials to amend your citrus tree soil (except for manure, more on this below). The purpose is to revive the soil and solve whichever issue it was having, whether it was dead, holding too much water, or any other issue. If the issue is severe enough, consider repotting your citrus tree and amending all of the soil (see the transplant steps above for instructions). Our goal for our homemade potting mix is to make a loamy soil that is slightly more on the sandy or acidic side.

Whichever soil mix you choose, know that you can’t really go wrong. Just make sure to have a rich, slightly acidic, and well-draining soil, and your citrus tree will be happy for years on end! How to Transplant the Tree With the New Soil A series of soil-based seed and potting composts made to specific formulae developed by the John Innes Horticultural Institute in the 1930s. They contain loam, sand, peat (or peat substitute), ground chalk and varying amounts of added fertilisers, according to their purpose. John Innes compost in areas where hard water has to be used for irrigation. There are also specially formulated citrus composts available. Repotting is best done in spring, using only the next size pot. In years when repotting is not necessary, remove the top 5cm (2in) of old compost in late spring and replace with fresh compost.

This mix includes peat moss and worm castings for water retention and nutrition, perlite and sand for drainage, and lime to balance the pH – great ingredients for citrus trees. It’s also at a decent, mid-level price. However, it’s a fairly fine mix that would likely get waterlogged and compacted if overwatered, so I would add in some pine bark to solve that problem. This company hand blends these potting mixes. Another one they sell is labeled for pineapple plants and contains the same ingredients, but with the addition of fir bark. And look while we're at it, let's sort this container size. 100 litres - you're getting a bit too small if you want to keep this in a continuous production area. I've got 250 litres - safety in the volume of water I can store, safety in the heat I can absorb, the fertiliser regime. I can produce a really nice crop in that size container or even bigger.
