Because The Enemy is published in 2009, so it can be estimated that the book itself takes place in 2009. The events of The Dead take place just over a year before the events of The Enemy, which would place the beginning of the outbreak in 2008. James Stornay - A scientist boy who was killed by Paul Channing. He is two years older than Wiki and Jibber-Jabber. I’m reminded of that story where George RR Martin was pulled up by a fan for getting someone’s eye colour wrong… Consisting of many practising Christians, they are compared to the Cathedral Kids. They are the only group that doesn't later aid Ed. Their Ascot races team colour is blue.

As they are making their way to the palace, the Waitrose and Morrisons children (Now called the Holloway kids after the road both shops were on) are met by a large army of zombies, led by the Saint George zombie Sam saw earlier. In the resulting fight, Arran and Maxie discover they are attracted to each other, a secret they both kept for fear of the other person not feeling the same way. The Holloway children eventually force the zombie army into a retreat, but Arran's bite causes him to go insane and chase after them. He is mistaken for a zombie by a girl named Sophie (Leader of a group of archers) and she shoots him in the chest with a bow and arrow. Despite her attempts to save him, Arran eventually dies in Maxie's arms (much to her grief). Shadowman - A boy of fifteen, he is a self sufficient survivor, who acts as a spy for Jester, in return for a guaranteed home at the Palace whenever he needs it. He wears a cloak that is camouflaged to the city to help him remain undetected, and also carries a laptop bag, which he keeps his items in. He is known to be very secretive, and enjoys spying on people and watching from a distance, trying to stay away from getting close to people. Not many people know his real name, and he uses a different identity for every settlement. He carries a crossbow, machete, three knives and on occasion a club. His only known friends are Jester and Go-Girl. David - a look at his plans for the future and also what has been happening for him the previous few days.Disney Hyperion, the series' American publisher, wanted to target the books at a slightly older audience. Consequently, for this publisher's series, the cutoff age for infection was raised from 14 to 16, and some of the characters were aged up accordingly. Additionally, some of the cultural references and terminology unique to the United Kingdom were changed to ones that American readers were more likely to understand. [8] Characters [ edit ] Waitrose group [ edit ] How much planning do you do for all your books? I ask as this series is one of the more intricately plotted series I’ve read, playing about with time frames and perspectives… Chris Marker, a former student of Rowhurst, begins to write an account of what has happened since the infection. He titles this epic The Chronicles of Survival. Well I’ve got a couple of big TV projects on the go. The main one is a big 10-hour fantasy drama series for ITV. If all goes well, it should be on our screens next September. But because it’s early days I can’t actually tell you that much about it sadly. Phil - Matt's youngest acolyte in The Dead. It is not made clear if he survived and made it to St. Paul's or died at Lambeth Bridge.

In Holloway, a group of kids make their home in a Waitrose supermarket and elect two kids -- Arran Harper and Maxie -- as their leader and second-in-command. Another group of kids make their home in a Morrisons supermarket, and a boy named Blue establishes himself as their leader.

Just John" – The leader of the squatters in the park. He is nearly killed by Achilleus, and he and his group are cast out of the park. He, like Achilleus, has designs shaved into his head. The Mad King- A boy with some disability, a large body, watery eyes, heavy brow and a stiff walk. He is the proxy leader of the Ascot kids but doesn't speak often and what he says is nonsense that Arno Fletcher interprets. The Enemy is the first book in a series of seven. Penguin House Books released the second novel in the series, titled The Dead, on September 16th, 2010, followed by The Fear on September 15th, 2011; The Sacrifice on September 20th, 2012; The Fallen on September 12th, 2013; the sixth novel, The Hunted, on 4 September 2014; and the final book, The End, on November 10th, 2015. Well obviously my love of George Romero zombie films was my starting point. I’ve always loved horror and after having done Young James Bond and the action-adventure genre I thought what’s another really good genre that kids would buy into? The other great thing about horror is that it’s not gender specific. Girls love horror as much as boys, and I have tried to put a lot of good, strong female characters in the books. A horror cover doesn’t say ‘no girls allowed’. Then I thought if I’m going to do scary books, what scared me? The movie monster that always scared me the most, since I saw Night Of The Living Dead as a teenager, was the zombie. You can do a lot with zombies. George Romero himself freely admits his films had a strong satirical element to them. He was talking about American society and a lot of the stuff that was going on at that time. Because zombies are people you can add a lot of layers in, but you can do it in a way where kids don’t feel they’re being hit over the head or lectured. I think there’s a lot in my books about friendship, leadership, about society and how it works, how we learn to live with each other and what skills do we need to make a viable society. Kids don’t need to know any of that, they just want someone to be eaten again. The Holloway crew are survivors. They've fought their way across London and made it to the Natural History Museum alive - just. But the fight will never end while the Enemy lives, unless there's another way. . .
