Description

When a mint 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95 popped up on our local used camera ‘buy and sell’ I could not resist. https://www.rfi.fr/en/international/20210922-french-study-warns-of-the-massive-scale-of-chinese-influence-around-the-world It seems this has only been manufacturerd for a short time and I don’t know much about it. There is a test at opticallimits that might give you an idea. The TTArtisan 50mm F/0.95 is neither clinical nor transparent. Just what is this lens? Well, it’s an affordable, ultra-fast, character lens. If you know what you’re getting, it might find a home in your camera bag.

At half-body portrait distance the differences are not that big. But if you focus on something farther away the Zhong Yi pulls ahead when it comes to sharpness and bokeh. Since I got rid of all my Fuji lenses I am also loving my files. 🙂 While I’ve been using Fuji since 2012 I’ve also Nikon since 2004, and Canon, and preferred the colors from those cams. But now I think perhaps it is mostly about lenses. This 7Artisans has really improved things. Well, someday maybe try the 5.6. You might be surprised what can be done. Up close on portraits, some very nice, surprisingly shallow DOF. Because the price on western market is final price after all export costs and with the country costs in which they are sold … … gap is big very very big. When the major cameras and lens makers will close like in garment industry and so on, … Please be aware that there are some differences even between lenses of the same model from different brands. This is not a quality issue. We will be looking at 100% crops from the 24mp Sony A7III and the Leica M10. Both cameras do not have an anti aliasing filter in front of the sensor. 2.1m distance (24mp Sony A7III vs 24mp Leica M10)After I bought the 7Artisans, that’s the ONLY thing I wish from Fujifilm, a manual prime with data transfer, like the new Voigtländer 35mm F1.2. And if they would do such a lens, it would be insane if they made some software tweaks to get some focus peaking/digital parallax focus for the OVF. It would be a dream to have a manual lens that was fully functional with the OVF! Do I really need to buy a Leica to get that feature?

Wide open there is strong light falloff of roughly 3.7 EV in the extreme corners, stopped down to f/1.4 this improves to 3.0 EV, stopped down to f/2.8 it is 2.8 EV and further improves to 2.5 EV at f/8.0. Of all these manual 50mm lens options, which would you recommend for portraits and cityscapes with a focus on smooth round/oval bokeh? F0.95 is sure nice to have but I assume I’ll shoot mostly around F1.4 and am not a fan of hexagonal type bokeh when stopping down.

This like that, many companies from Western countries have closed their doors, and the others like SHURE made in China. They do cut some corners perhaps. There have been some quality control issues reported online (see the Focus Shift blog linked in the article), they don’t calibrate their lenses, and the focusing mechanism is not the most precise (or expensive). Aside from that I see no reason to question its quality. The TTArtisan 50mm 0.95 shows pincushion distortion with a wavy sub frequency. To correct this we would need a lens specific profile which is not available (yet). This TTartisan is very tempting with that 0.95 aperture but I can place a bid on a Nokton E f1,2 in good condition for 400.- (I own FE55 as walk around AF 50 and my other MF kit lens are Loxia 21 and CV Nokton 35mm f1,2 VMII). I’m also thinking of upgrading the 35mm for VM version 3 or the SE but the gain in performance seems not as big as with the 50.

I prefer do not have a 0.95 lens, thant to buy one from this country. I will wait to have enough money to buy a Canon LTM or a Leica, by the way, 1.4 is enough. The beauty of designing the lens as Leica M mount is you can adapt it to pretty much any digital camera. On the Leica SL I use a Leica M-L adapter and I use the same adapter with my Lumix S5 mirrorless camera. That said, if people ask me what adapter to buy today I normally recommend the Novaflex M-L adapter as it’s cheaper and still works well. Get closer for dreamy detail shots For most portrait applications this will not be a problem though. Bokeh Sony A7rII | TTArtisan 50mm 0.95 | f/0.95 You also have different focus help by pressing and holding the same rear thumb wheel for a few secs. Repeat to switch between different modes. The most useful one is Focus peaking, where the area in focus is highlighted. You can select which color in the menu. You can also select a screen mode that displays a zoomed in focusarea on the side. One often overlooked aspect of Chinese fast lenses is the actual F/T-stop of the lens. (not just Chinese fast lenses, f1.2 is a very ambiguous aperture, frequently used for f1.29) I tested this lens for center brightness in a controlled setting & 0.95 is at least 1EV faster than 1.4, the manufacturer is not cheating, this is a true F1 lens. The same cannot be said about the Mitakon 35mm 0.95 mk2? lens that I’ve owned before. That lens offered about 1/3rd of a stop illumination difference between wide open & 1.4.

TTArtisan 35mm f/0.95 Lens | Fstoppers A Review of the New TTArtisan 35mm f/0.95 Lens | Fstoppers

Leica knows this, so this is what the M10 manual says about accuracy with fast lenses. Gold bayonet and rangefinder coupling For me you would buy the Voigtländer 50 f1 or the modern Leica Noctilux 50 0.95 if you need the fast aperture and want modern rendering. They would suit people looking for a fast but useable maximum aperture without excess character. ( I’m being over critical, both lenses are amazing but lens character than TTArtisan and older Noctilux). Artistic and imperfect And in this perspective, it is then important to say the TTArtisan 35mm ƒ0.95 is 1% the price of the Leica 50mm Noctilux and easily only approximately 33% of its weight, and we cannot run from the laws of physics in lens design. I did two street photography sessions with the 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95 for this review and for both sessions I was surprised by the number of keepers I had with shots in focus. I also missed a few but as a rule, most photos were okay.

Conclusion

This is the second native Fujifilm X mount manual focus lens I have tested, the other being the TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2. In the same breath shooting the 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95 is a different experience almost like shooting a film camera with a manual focus lens. Now, everyone is free, … for me state or not state company is not the point : high level of national incomes are used for hegemony inside and outside the country, many many dangerous weapons, cameras systems, softwares and systems to control people, spying, … list should be very long. I do not want to help them to build the chains they will put around me. Actually not mentioned enough is are these F0.95 lenses ‘sharp’ at F0.95. This is 1 reason why these very fast lenses are expensive if made well. In this sense the TTArtisan is better than the 7Artisans and I understand the newly released Meike version. The TTArtisan is not very sharp of course but sharp enough imo. There is little point in buying a F0.95 lens when I can’t shoot wide open. The TTArtisan 35mm f/0.95 was released in November 2022 and is made for Fujifilm X mount, Sony E, Canon RF, Canon M, Nikon Z, L-Mount, and Micro four-thirds.
