To the west end of this structure was attached one about a third smaller in all its proportions: - the line of its front standing back about two yards from that of the larger house, and the line of its roof, of course, being considerably depressed below that of the roof adjoining. Not more than six steps from the main door of the cottage stood the dead trunk of a fantastic pear–tree, so clothed from head to foot in the gorgeous bignonia blossoms that one required no little scrutiny to determine what manner of sweet thing it could be. Its banks, of the emerald grass already described, rounded, rather than sloped, off into the clear heaven below; and so clear was this heaven, so perfectly, at times, did it reflect all objects above it, that where the true bank ended and where the mimic one commenced, it was a point of no little difficulty to determine. It was grass, clearly—but grass such as we seldom see out of England—so short, so thick, so even, and so vivid in color.
