Description

Going through the effort to make homemade baby food really only works if you have a good plan for how to store the food to ensure that it stays fresh and that baby has plenty of opportunities to enjoy it. After making a LOT of baby food for my third kiddo to send with him to daycare, I got into a good routine of making and storing baby food—both in the fridge and freezer. Here’s how you can do it too. Pop out frozen cubes and transfer to freezer storage bags. Label as desired with the type of baby food and the date.

After freezing, the instructions recommend running the plastic section under hot water, and I found the spheres popped out easily after doing so. All of the spheres had slight ridges where the top and bottom of the mold meet, but this line was less noticeable than on spheres made using other molds.Use one ice-cube tray for potato/pasta/rice, one for vegetables/fruit, and one for meat/poultry/fish/pulses. There are two factors that make ice cloudy: the direction the water freezes and impurities or air bubbles in the water. I prefer silicone ones because it's easier to tip the cubes out."(Type of tray recommended by Mumsnet user lilham) Our verdict

Material: Silicone tray with lid | Number of ice cubes: Nine | Size: 14 x 14 x 5cm | Cube size: Can hold up to 60ml What we like I have the NUK storage pots and ice cube trays and [my baby] has been happily eating a whole pot each meal time."(Vetted by Mumsnet user Pea2019) Our verdict To freeze basil, parsley, and other herbs in an ice cube tray, prep them by removing the stems and chopping. Place about a tablespoon in each section of the ice cube tray, and then top with water or olive oil. Press down to submerge the herbs in the liquid, and then set them in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer bag or container and label them with the date.

How we chose our recommendations

During testing, we found that the ice cube tray lid did indeed prevent spills on the way from the faucet to the freezer, as well as when the tray was tipped at an angle while freezing. It may take some practice to smooth the lid until sealed and tip it over the sink to remove all excess water from the rim. Water trapped there may build up underneath the lid as it freezes, making it a bit difficult to remove. The construction of the Everyday Tray is unique among the ice cube trays I tested, and is one of the big reasons why this is the best ice cube tray I tested. The Everyday Tray is made of silicone and none of the cubes share a wall, so you can release them one at a time by applying pressure to the bottom. I also found that this helps the cubes release easily because there is no friction between neighboring ice cubes and the whole tray doesn't empty out at once. Mumsnetters love Lakeland for all things kitchen gadget and this flexible ice cube tray comes highly recommended on the forums. Its oversized design is handy for keeping drinks chilled for longer and for storing soups, purées, fruit juice and more.
