Like fisheyes and ultra-ultra wides, the petals on the front of the lens are to protect the lens when you carry it around or put it down on a table face-first. This 14-24mm AF-S G works perfectly on almost every AF film camera, although you won't get autofocus with the cheapest or oldest AF film cameras like the N55 or N2020. But if you need a bit more versatility and are happy with 8 1/2 out of 10 optics, the 16-35 VR should be your lens of choice.

There are some crazy adapters made for large square filters, but watch out: you'll often have problems with the lens is seeing behind it via reflections off the rear of the filters! Its superb rendering performance and compact build set it apart from any other ultra-wide-angle zoom out there. S p h e r o c h r o m a t i s m can cause colored fringes on out-of-focus highlights, usually seen as green fringes on backgrounds and magenta fringes on foregrounds. We also offer product videos, reviews and image samples to help you to choose which camera or lens is right for you.

This lens has NO Optical Image Stabilization (OIS, IS or VR (Vibration Reduction)), but it does work with in-camera stabilization. Reviewers should be critical of things that actually matter and relate to what the lens was designed for. I’ve read elsewhere that it is an excellent Astro lens, but no coma tests and mentioning a fast fall off in sharpness is worrisome. This is printed on tractor-fed paper with tear-off sides and dot-matrix printing of model and serial numbers! And the optics, although not quite as good as it’s bigger brother, are certainly not bad by any means – in fact they are very good.

The good news is that modern lenses like this have little problem with stray light, unlike the awful old 15mm f/3.This remarkable professional lens features a Nano Crystal coating to reduce the effects of ghost and flare, and delivers edge-to-corner sharpness that can surpass that of equivalent fixed focal-length lenses.

On a cropped sensor, the 14-24mm is equivalent to a 21-36mm lens, which is still wide enough for most situations, but not quite what it was designed to be…the 7mm field of view difference is quite significant on the wide end. They all look the same when stopped down to f/8, but you still can't put filters on the front of the 14-24mm.
