A turning point in his personal politics seems to have come after becoming an advisor to the Northern Irish Policing Board (NIPB). There is one further interruption to the narrative, which has quite an unabashed agenda: to show that Starmer is not who he’s pretending to be. Perhaps I'm being too harsh, as even the most eagle-eyed Westminster observers have found this challenging to do.

When cornered by McKinnon’s mother who demanded an explanation and for the DPP to listen to her concern, as a mother, all Starmer could offer in reply was “speaking to you is making me uncomfortable”. Ashcroft informed Starmer of his project, but received no reply; it emerged over time that not only did the Labour leader not wish to cooperate, he had asked his associates not to either. It took Theresa May of all people as home secretary to personally refuse the extradition which apparently sent Starmer into a “rage” who booked the next flight to Washington to grovel at the seat of Holder. Starmer was the architect of Labour’s second-referendum Brexit policy, which was considered a major factor in its worst electoral defeat for nearly a century. Why would Starmer campaign so hard against the death penalty in Belize and Uganda, when his clients had been convicted of “shocking crimes”?So a frankly incredible amount of quote time is given over to people who were kicking around the same environments – Leeds Labour Club while at university, for instance, or the Socialist Society – and “can’t remember Starmer at all”. Starmer committed to look into it but he shouldn’t have needed to look very far; in 2011 he issued new guidance on rape which gave more power to the police to determine the credibility of victims.

This period of his career has until now been very much under-examined, with Starmer escaping scrutiny and accountability. An aide who worked closely with Starmer between 2016 and 2019 reflected that this was ‘typical of Keir.

It was only later when public pressure became unbearable that Starmer flipped – as a consequence of his prevarication he was censured by a parliamentary select committee and yet now he consistently claims that he stood up to the Murdoch press and was responsible for prosecuting the wrong-doers; in reality in had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the courts. Ashcroft uncovers more revelations than in his previous effort, notably regarding Starmer's childhood, early career and, chiefly, his years as a barrister. Instead, his performance was not as surefooted as his supporters had hoped for, or his opponents feared. They included people who are now among the most senior members of Keir Starmer's Shadow Cabinet: Rachel Reeves, Wes Streeting, Shabana Mahmood and Steve Reed. Why did he live in a flat above a sauna in north London in the late 80s, when “some of his later flatmates were young women.

One Boy, Two Bills and a Fry Up isn’t due out until August, but a draft has been submitted to the publisher and it has a cover image. Starmer’s conduct during the and after the demonstrations in London after the murder of Mark Duggan demonstrate neatly why he fails to understand minority communities and ended up referring to Black Lives Matter as a “moment” in time as opposed to the global movement it really is. It smacks of Starmer's indecision, deciding to reinstate Corbyn, then deciding not to after being besieged by leading Jewish members of the party. Sir Keir said last year that he had begun penning a book about his life and political vision during the Covid lockdowns.

As Karie Murphy remarked, the defeat of 2019 ‘was never about the media strategy; it was about the political direction of the party’.In 2008, he was appointed director of public prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service for England and Wales, a role he held until 2013. The Labour Together project has subsequently transformed the Party into an authoritarian machine entirely intolerant of dissent, rowing back on an ocean of previous commitments and propagating an agenda of reheated austerity.
