I knew very little about Never Mine before I started reading it, only that the only other Bryce Oakley novel I'd read, I enjoyed well enough, but that cover had my attention. I thought that the banter between the two main characters was really funny and I liked the chemistry that slowly built between the two of them. Their relationship progressed in a believable way. I thought that them writing songs together was an organic way to have them grow closer. This was a pretty short book so it never got too deep, but I did enjoy some of the commentary it had on the music industry and fame as a whole. Sage grinned, her mouth quirking up at the edge in lopsided amusement. “I did. And you were… Lachlan’s little sister.”

I also found the humanity of the main characters to be so well done that I felt like I knew them in real life. It’s interesting because more often than not fauxmance books tend to have a main character who is a bit of an ice queen. I realised with this book that I also love it when both characters are nice people that I want to cheer on. Oh, yeah, it was soccer, if I remember correctly,” Willa said with an exaggerated thinking face, her brows pulled low as she tapped her chin.

Instead of blowing up, though, Willa realises that there is an opportunity here for her to bring Sage with to the bachelorette and at least make it look like she isn’t the loser she feels. Fifteen years ago, Willa and Sage roamed the same halls of Edgelake High School. When their paths cross again, they decide to team up to solve both their problems - a stable, albeit fake, relationship to snag the endorsement deal and a hot soccer star to make the couples getaway sting a little less.... But when the lines between real and fake start to blur, will they be able to keep the growing heat between them just a game, or will they start playing to win? Why in the world was Sage still talking to her? She turned slightly, giving Sage an out if she wanted to leave instead of chat. An awkward silence stretched between them as Willa pressed her lips together, shifting her weight between her heels. Ah, there it was. She nodded, trying to keep her pleasant smile plastered to her face. “Sure was. Am. I mean, am. He’s alive. Currently alive.” Stop talking. “Not at all dead, don’t worry. He’s in sales now.” She couldn’t shut up. “For, uh… Google.” Sage was nodding, but Willa had the sinking feeling that she was losing interest. She should start searching for a path to hide under the giant inflatable seashell.

I liked both characters a lot. But especially Sage. For some reason the "Shane McCutchen type cleans up" trope always entertains and amuses me. But you can really feel the affection both Willa and Sage have for each other, and how much they push each other out of their respective comfort zones in the best of ways. Sage standing up for Willa and Willa helping Sage grow up are some heartwarming scenarios. Of course she’d followed Sage’s career–it felt illegal to be a lesbian and not keep tabs on national team soccer stars, after all. That said, I'm going with a bit of a wobbly four stars. Yeah, the rush at the end was bad but at least the parts of the relationship I had attached to played out well-enough. Never Mine is a fake relaionship kind of story between to women, one of whom is a world class soccer player and the other an event coordinator, who get thrown together by a mutual need for a date for an event. Of course what started out as a fake relationship doesn't stay that for long ...This book was a nice read after finishing a longer one, this was supposed to be short and fun, but it was a bit more because it turned out to be a bit emotional and charged with real issues like alcohol abuse and in this genre (f/f) that's not common. I will say I couldn’t stand Ava and didn’t understand why they were all so lovely to her. It’s not one I would re read but made for a good single read romance. Right. Totally,” Willa said, making a show of looking at Sage’s own name tag. “Oh, Sage Carson. I remember you played…” Play it cool. “Sports?” The communication of real feelings is a bit of an issue though and I know it is to keep the drama and angst going in the book, but also for the life of me I just want to yell "talk to each other and don't assume!" to these characters. Never Mine is a fake dating romance with Sage Carson and Willa Bellamy. Sage is a professional soccer player on the ending stretch of her career- especially after a minor ACL tear and the recovery process with that. She's also a playgirl and known for having a good time. When she is offered the potential of a major endorsement deal, she decided to try to play nice to get it. Willa Bellamy is an event planner of the Denver Zoo, but when she receives a bachelorette party invite from her ex that is couples themed, she doesn't want to be the odd one out. So when Sage and Willa run into each other at a high school reunion, they formulate a plan that can seemingly help each other out. But why would you need to fake it when feelings are there the whole time?

In Never Mine me meet two women: Sage Carson, a nation-wide celebrity, the first soccer player brave enough to come out in such a straight environment, and Willa Bellamy, who works in a Zoo making contracts and organazing events. They two meet and start a fake relationship that then becomes something more. I found this audiobook on Storytel. It's the first book of the Kaleidoscope series and the only one to date with an audio version. I really love the narration by Lori Prince and think she's the best choice for this story.Opción #1: Servidor de Compañero Lento #1 (podría requerir verificación del navegador - ¡descargas ilimitadas!) This is a fake-dating romance, which is one of my favorite tropes because it forces two characters who aren't romantically attached to grow that relationship until there is, what is usually, a genuine romantic attachment, and Never Mine succeeds in delivering on that trope. Sweet, sunshiny Willa Bellamy has a crisis on her hands. She’s used to it — as an events coordinator for the Denver Zoo, it’s her job to handle crises. But when she receives an invite to her ex’s wedding, she’s not so sure it’ll be as easy to handle as an escaped emu during a Girl Scout sleepover. Even worse, when the bachelorette party invite mentions that couples are welcome, she realizes she’s the sole single person invited. Enter: The band's manager mentions an opportunity - work with a famous musician starting a solo career. Billie is reluctant but agrees. Vero, for her part, has been ignoring her manager so didn't even know Billie was going to be visiting her at her home. And it was awesome seeing them develop an understanding that extended into their songwriting and let them create beautiful music together (sorry, I couldn't resist a dip in the trite). Oakley is at her best depicting the collaboration and music and I liked how she showed the intent and message of the lyrics but only gave enough detail to see refining and honing without giving so much that you get bogged down in trying to see it as an actual song. It was a good choice not trying to replicate actual lyrics so it worked exceptionally well.

Never Mine by Bryce Oakley | Goodreads

Now I love a typical faux romance story, especially when it’s F/F. You always know how it’s going to end and this one was no exception but I went into it, knowing exactly what I was getting myself into. Sage is not totally sold on the idea of a fake relationship but when she attends her 15 year high school reunion she realises that it may not be the worst plan in the world, especially since she has reconnected with a former acquaintance from school, Willa, and there is just something about this beautiful woman that draws Sage. Her manager approaches her with a big opportunity for an endorsement deal but there is a catch, Sage has a reputation for being rebellious and needs to come across as more stable. Her manager asks Sage to find a fake girlfriend to prove long term stability.Support authors: If you like this and can afford it, consider buying the original, or supporting the authors directly. A smirk appeared on Sage’s face. “Oh? Because fifteen seconds ago you asked if I did…” She pretended she was having trouble recalling. “Sports, right?” Willa has her own problems. She is chronically single. That’s fine for her 15 year reunion but it’s a little awkward for her ex girlfriend’s bachelorette party which encourages people to come as couples. The last thing Willa wants is to be the lone single in the beautiful Belize . Their friendship is great, how they grow as individual characters, but also as a couple, even when they really aren’t a couple is very well done. The story has a nice flow and the characters, in true Oakley fashion, are very likeable. The book is written from alternating third person POV for both Willa and Sage and that is something I always like as well.
