Description

way, 3-driver system: The separate drivers for low, mid, and high frequencies ensure balanced and detailed audio output.

The sound is clear and transparent across the whole spectrum, with seamless cohesion between the three drivers. The highs are vibrant and accurate, thanks to the independent super-tweeter. The midrange is smooth and enveloping, slightly tending towards the warm. The combination of crisp highs and intricate mids delivers an exceptional sound texture that I imagine will please classical music enthusiasts. The 5.25-inch woofer performs well, though it won’t galvanize listeners with a passion for bass-heavy music. Bear in mind that this is a wired speaker, meaning that it doesn’t come with built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity options. Sound 5.0

Specifications

The SS-CS5 is a great budget option and some of my favorite bookshelf speakers in any price range. But here’re a few other options that are worth your consideration. Sony SS-CS5 vs Jamo S 803 As far as speaker brands go, you can be pretty confident in Sony, as they’ve been a reputable player in the audio space for several decades. Price Next, use a flat head screwdriver (or similar) and something to protect the front baffle of the speaker (I used a small piece of thin cardboard). Pry up the woofer where its dowels are glued into the cabinet at the bottom, left, and right. The glue makes an interesting ccchhhhh sound as it releases. I have included a picture that shows the attachment locations in green, and one dowel in red. Remove the tweeter baffle to get an angle on the dowel at the top. Pry up the last dowel, and remove the woofer. Polk is a brand that doesn’t fall in the top or top-mid tier of the market. If someone is buying Polk it is because they usually are looking for a budget-friendly option. Edifier also has its own mix of budget-friendly options such as the R1700BT or the R1850DB.

When compared directly to high-end bookshelf speakers, the overall sound may appear flat. However, the neutral, authentic sound of the speakers makes them versatile. They sound great for use with any media, including music, movies, television, and video games.

Features

The Sony SSCS5 is a bookshelf speaker that offers deep sounds and it does it with a great clarity. Not only will the sound from this speaker fill your room, but you will also hear a lot of nuances. There is some great bass, very present mids, and a very accurate treble. The ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 bookshelf speakers are a step up in terms of price and performance compared to the Sony SSCS5. These speakers feature a custom-designed tweeter and woofer, along with a sophisticated crossover, which will give you a more refined sound. The ELAC speakers also have a larger cabinet and a more robust build quality, which contributes to their improved bass response.

Even on non-vocal recordings, the overall sound was good and full, but the treble was a little rough. Above 4 kHz, there are some peaks and troughs in the response according to this Sony SSCS5 review.

The frequency response of the SS-CS5 speakers extends beyond the typical bookshelf speakers. The listed response range is 53Hz to 50kHz. The sensitivity rating of the speakers is 87dB, which is relatively standard. Most speakers have a sensitivity rating between 87dB and 88dB. Build quality is good, and you get the impression the SS-CS5 is built to last. Sony has a reputation for using high-quality components even for their most affordable products, and in this speaker, you’ll find a solid, all-wood construction that’ll not only protect your gear but also remove unwanted resonances. The 100W speakers come with a unique tapered edge of the faceplate and contribute a lot in producing high-quality sounds. It also helps in reducing any unwanted noise that might appear from the baffle board or the cabinet. The speaker grilles can be attached with grommets (not with magnets), though the SS-CS5 looks decent both with and without them. All in all, there are better-looking speakers out there. Compatibility 4.5

The SS-CS5 offers a broader sound and a somewhat smoother midrange than the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR, but it has a weaker treble according to this Sony SSCS5 review. Size The mid-range sounds and treble are clear and accurate when listening to music with low volumes or high volumes. As vocals tend to fall into the mid and upper frequencies, these speakers provide exceptional voice reproduction. Furthermore, you won’t find any magnets here. But the overall look of these speakers is nice and they do have an expensive look to them at first glance. While the Jamo S 803 is undoubtedly a good-quality speaker, I don’t particularly like its midrange reproduction. When compared to the SS-CS5, mids feel flat and slightly colored. However, the bass feels deeper and more pronounced, so if neutrality is not as crucial as an energizing low-end, you should consider the S 803. Sony SS-CS5 vs Polk Audio T15 Wide frequency response: The broad frequency range covered by these speakers allows them to deliver a rich and immersive listening experience. This post shows the impact of shorting the resistor in the woofer crossover. Instead of adding and removing the short for every measurement, I used the 2nd speaker from the pair. The 2 speakers don't measure quite identically (though they do image quite well). The major impact of shorting the resistor is to fill in the slight dip in response between 2 kHz and 4 kHz. Originally, the woofer and tweeter don't quite reach each other at the crossover point. Instead of each of them being 6 dB down, they're more like 8 dB down, and thus there's a depression in the frequency response there (even though they match well in phase). Shorting the resistor extends the woofer's response to meet the tweeter's, yet the slope of the woofer's high frequency attenuation is actually increased (which is also a good thing in this case). The tweeter response isn't changed, so there's no concern about decreased power handling.
