What is new is that, once you have achieved certain points during your Crusade you then unlock a Campaign badge, which is very cool. It’s worth bearing in mind that it doesn’t have quite as much synergy support as before (between changes to Warriors, Cryptothralls and Reanimators), but it’s still very potent, and ideal for messing up the opponent’s murder maths. The new Overlord with Translocation Shroud has his uses, but I’m not sure how much I’ll be using his Advance ability.

For a destroyer army, the primary army rules only apply to about half the army, where are the rules for hexmark and locusts? Going from S6 AP-1 to S7 AP-2 is utterly game-changing, and I expect to smash this button a lot more with the new book. For me the book gave me a lot of new details on the different Dynasties of the Necrons, which is great. All in all – still good strats supporting an all-rounder list, and this detachment should certainly see some experimentation unless the Canoptek Court completely outmodes it. They to me have a great balance of Enhancements and Stratagems (plus it probably helps that I love the models they lean in to!For getting your toys around the table, Protocol of the Sudden Storm also comes back, turning your weapons Assault, and providing re-rolls on an Advance if your unit is being lead.

Metalodermal Tesla Weave does mortal wounds to a unit that is charging the bearer’s unit, Dimensional Sanctum gives the character and unit Infiltrate whilst Autodivinator allows you to gain CP whenever your opponent uses an ability which grants them additional CP (handy for the cool strats we’ll be moving on to shortly). I completely get not wanting unkillable bricks, but the army at higher levels did not win a ton with this strategy. The new Codex: Necrons provides a set of Crusade rules that will get your robotic brain whizzing with fresh engrams as you awaken your tomb world. This is still good, but it means that if you want to enjoy the other benefits of being lead in this detachment, you need an actual leader. The Transcendent C’tan can no longer take Enhancements, but this is still very strong on a Catacomb Command Barge, creating a hefty brawler.

It goes without saying really that if you just love your Destroyers and Flayed Ones, then this is the Detachment for you. I also hate how their necks are always separated, which is again just an annoying piece to fit in there, make sure it fits between the chest shell, and then glue a head on. Comprehensive datasheets for all 47 Necron units, ranging from the common Necron Warriors to the formidable Imotekh the Stormlord. Where you might consider this is on Enmitic Lokhust Heavies, as with a Lord it lets them rack up absurd numbers of hits, but even there losing the ability to try and chip vehicles hurts. My two favourites however are Insanity’s Ire, which not only is a cool name for a strat, but also allows you to move a Destroyer Cult or Flayed One unit to move towards an enemy unit in your opponents turn should they successfully wound said unit (I believe the Tyranid’s Carnifexes have a similar rule, only on their Datasheet instead of a strat). The new Necrons started to feel a little too thin and flimsy, so it is something that annoys me when trying to build a kit. These phalanxes are joined by techno-sorcerous war engines, scuttling constructs, and shards of shattered star gods, led to war by undying nobles with wills and bodies of unyielding metal, driven by the absolute conviction that they are the rightful rulers of the galaxy.
