Description

From the front, the TG-4 looks seriously contemporary and muscular. It’s all hard edges and is almost industrial in its design. Despite the bog standard image sensor, there is no mistaking that this is a viable alternative than your smartphone or iPad for taking snaps at the beach or on the ski slopes. In other words, and this is important, it actually has a reason to exist independently.

Olympus Tough TG-4 Overview - Digital Photography Review

iPhoneXSmax has two cameras with fixed lens at 26, 52mm equivalent, Oly's zoom power is 100mm equivalent. But you could use a 2x add on lens to reach that with your iPhone and keep much better IQ than the Oly. ISO 3200 delivers a 4 x 6 inch print that may work for certain less critical applications, but overall the print is a bit too "scorched" looking and the colors a bit too muted to attain our good seal. While the image quality from the TG-6 is fine, modern smartphones will surpass it in most situations, though once downsized to social media resolutions, it's less noticeable. But, remember, your phone isn't exactly rugged. While out-of-camera JPEGs have pleasant colors *, the lens just isn't very sharp and too much noise reduction is applied. Turning down the 'noise filter' option helps a bit, but if you're up to the challenge of processing the results, shooting Raw is the way to get the most out of the TG-6.

The Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 is a compact photo camera with a 16 MP BSI CMOS sensor type and a 1/2.3" image sensor size. It has a maximum image resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and 4 supported aspect ratios: 1:1, 3:2, 4:3, 16:9. This camera supports RAW image formats and has GPS satellite capabilities. Its optical zoom has a magnification of 4x and can be increased by an additional 4x with its digital zoom feature. Top right of the lens is recognizably an integral flash and combined AF assist/self timer/LED lamp window, the flash being controlled via a dedicated setting on the standard four-way control pad at the rear of the TG-4. Flash settings wise, we get the standard auto and forced flash/fill-in option, along with a red eye setting and one that activates the fairly blinding LED lamp (in conjunction with a holding down of the shutter release button), for when you need that extra ‘oomph’ in the illumination department – perhaps for shooting a short video clip. Everyday shooters and parents who want something that can be dropped or get wet, unlike their smartphone

There are 7 ISO settings available on the Olympus TG-4. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting for both JPEG and RAW.Sharpness. The Olympus TG-4 produces somewhat soft images as is often the case with this class of camera, though without strong sharpening halos around high-contrast edges that we often see. Edge enhancement creates the illusion of sharpness by enhancing colors and tones right at the edge of a rapid transition in color or tone. Above left: 100% crop, 4.5-18mm at 18mm, 1/10, 100 ISO, IS off. Above right: 100% crop, 4.5-18mm at 18mm, 1/10, 100 ISO, IS on.

The battery is same LI-92B used in the earlier TG3 and provides enough power for 300 shots, not as good as the 370 you’l get with the COOLPIX AW130, and if you make extensive use of the GPS or Wifi that number will reduce significantly. Remaining power is shown on screen by a three segment battery graphic. The battery is charged in the camera via the A/V / charging port. There’s a supplied A/C charger and a cable with a USB connection at one end and a proprietary connection to the camera at the other. so you can plug in and recharge from a laptop, car adaptor or any other convenient source, but you’ll need to remember to take the Olympus cable with you. It’s the same arrangement on the Nikon COOLPIX AW130, except with a standard USB port on the camera, making it a little more flexible. ISO 1600 prints at 5 x 7 inches just pass our seal of approval, retaining full color and exhibiting low noise. Similar to ISO 800, contrast detail is now lost in our red-leaf swatch of fabric, but the rest of the print remains reasonably sharp. The TOUGH TG4 lens features optical stabilisation which can be turned on or off from the camera menu. To test it I zoomed the lens in to its maximum 100mm equivalent and took a series of shots at progressively slower shutter speeds with the stabilisation turned off and then with it enabled. As you can see from the 100 percent crops above, it’s possible to hand hold the TG4 and get sharp shots down to 1/10th, a little over three stops slower than you’d expect without stabilisation. While the TOUGH TG4 is a more than capable video camera, it’s a little disappointing not to see any new video features. With the exception of the time-lapse movie introduced on the TG3, these are essentially the same video modes as on the two-year-old TOUGH TG2. It would be nice to see at least some improved slow motion options with HD resolution or the ability to take stills during movie recording Portrait, e-Portrait, Landscape, Landscape + Portrait, Sport, Hand-held Starlight, Night Scene, Night + Portrait, Children, High Key, Low Key, DIS mode, Macro, Nature Macro, Candle, Sunset, Documents, Panorama (*), Fireworks, Beach & Snow, Fisheye Conv., Wide Conv., Macro Conv., 3D, PanningSo the 4x zoom on the TOUGH TG4 is average for a water-proof compact. Its sibling the TOUGH TG-860 is a little out of the ordinary with a 5x zoom that starts at a super-wide 21mm and extends to 105mm, while the Nikon COOLPIX AW130 also has a 5x zoom ranging from 24-120mm. FullHD video is recorded with stereo sound at 30fps, with optical zoom and image stabilisation. The camera has a number of high-speed video modes, recording at 240 or 120fps, although at a reduced resolution. The Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 features a 4x optical zoom lens, with a bright aperture of f/2.0, and is equivalent to 25mm to 100mm in 35mm terms. The sensor is a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, with sensor-shift image stabilisation to help keep shots sharp in low light or when using the optical zoom. The camera automatically adjusts the settings best suited for the scene. Camera menu settings such as white balance and exposure compensation can be changed. Before we move on to look at the quality results, there’s one final feature of the Olympus TOUGH TG4 that you won’t find on the other rugged water-proof compacts I’ve tested and that’s the ability to shoot camera RAW files. Choose 16M +RAW from the quality settings menu and you’ll get a RAW file in the Olympus .ORF format as well as a full resolution JPEG.
