In my opinion, Citadel Technical Paints are worth it if you’re looking for a way to add unique effects to your models without having to use complicated techniques or materials. They are fast to use.

The key here is to leave a good area flat area for your models to stand on, then some interesting shapes as required. In an effort to save money, I’ve tried a lot of different approaches to basing models. See my post on 3D printing bases. But, there are three good reason for why Citadel textured products are popular and worth the investment. Simplicity, efficiency, and reliability. If you decide to seal this type of base use the flattest sealer you can find. Shine will defeat the look of the Agrellan Earth. The flatest clear coat that I have found so far is Alclad II Klear Kote Flat it is a lacquer so only use it in a well-ventalated area. If you have found a better product that isn’t so stinky let me know in the comment section at the bottom. Attaching your mini Any local hardware or home improvement store sells sanded tile grout. You can also get it online ( here).

It was at this point that I was discussing the bases with my brother, and he obnoxiously asked if I’d used straight PVA or watered down. Another variable to consider, another round of samples! Maybe you’re looking to find a cheaper replacement for Stirland Mud or my favorite, Agrellan Badlands.

In addition, I thought the surface of the dried Mordant Earth was just too smooth and shiny for what I had in mind. It was far more pāhoehoe than ʻaʻā. It looked frankly like a hard chocolate coating which just made me need to get some ice cream while I pondered what I was going to do next. What Went Wrong, and How to Do It Better I use uhmm, some kind of sealing medium first. Also from Viva Decor. Don't know the exact name but can look it up once I get home. I recently got it in my head to make some lava bases for a new army – cooled bits of stone over hot molten magma. While poking around the internet on how to make them look good I noted a recent(ish) Citadel Technical paint – Mordant Earth. But a test base had some strange results so I thought I’d document my experimentation with it and other methods for the benefit of you, gentle reader. Are the Citadel Texture Paints Worth It? Citadel Texture Paint – easy to apply, simple and fast. But, expensive? Are you trying to find an alternative to Agrellan Earth or Astrogranite? However, I have never had much trouble when I have stirred the pot properly. It adheres well to your base and any objects that you have placed on it before it is dry. You’ll want extremely thin, yet even coverage of Tyrant Skull across the entire base, as that’s what gives it that “pop” at a distance.

If your mini is one that would be hefty and sink into the ground like a troll or dragon, you can place it on the base after you paint it but before you apply the Agrellan Earth. This will give it the look of sinking into the dry brittle ground a little bit. Small bits of gravel were added in front bottom area and on the greenstuff with superglue. Sand was put down with PVA glue over the green stuff and also under the ledge and around the bits of gravel. Then agrellan earth was spread across the front area that was still bare base.As I mentioned, this is a fantastic horde base. It doesn’t require any real crafting or planning, and can easily be done in batches. If you don’t like how one particular base turned out, don’t throw it away. Go ahead and use it, and try different paint/wash/drybrush ratios on the next base. Once they are sitting next to 50+ other models with similar bases, they all blend together and any imperfections are entirely lost. I have made these bases with bright orange swirls that resemble lava or fire. I have also made these with bright green and purple to represent magic seeping up through the earth to power the caster standing on the base. For the base in this example, I primed it white and then painted it purple and pink randomly. Apply Agrellan Earth When it comes to pairing Citadel Colour paints with Agrellan Earth, a neutral green shade, it is all about finding the right balance of complementary, split-complementary, and analogous hues to create depth, highlights and shadows in your miniature painting. To achieve this, here are three Citadel Colour paints that pair well with Agrellan Earth: Premixed sanded tile grout comes in many colors. If you don’t want to paint your bases, you can simply buy the color you like. For example, you can buy an ivory colored grout for sand bases, or a white colored grout for snow bases.

Off again to the internet and I found a video on Warhammer TV suggesting to put down ‘Ardcoat on top of the paint rather than PVA. Same principle I suppose and a good place to start. And should the PVA be above or below the paint? I broke down a number of test scenarios and set about to see what would look best. All of these bases were primed with Wraithbone first, all references to “paint” are a splotched mix of Mephiston Red, Vallejo Light Orange, and Vallejo Flat Yellow. Here’s what I inflicted on each one: But when I applied this approach with Mordant Earth I found the PVA itself and the layer of paint under it also pulled apart leaving the primed base or maybe the milky PVA underneath exposed.

Astrogra nite Debris technical paint applied as a base texture, followed by subsequent drybrushing (for highlights) and darkening washes to adjust the shade. If you have a normal size mini that would look a bit off sinking into dried earth, then you should consider pinning it to the base. Simply use your pin vise to drill a hole through your base and a matching small hole into the heel of your mini. Insert a small brass rod into the heel of your mini gluing it into place with strong glue. Then pass the rod through the hole that you glued into the base. Trim it to length with your nippers and then glue it to hold your mini. That sounds like a bunch of steps, but really it’s very easy or a hobby idiot like me couldn’t do it.
