I started to worry about it, but decided to just go for it. I pretty much used the Tri-X recipe. Here’s how I did it: Kentmere Pan 400 is a great starter-film for people trying 35mm film photography for the first time. For this reason it is often known as a 'student' film! You can see from our results, we got good even tones in the greys. Plenty of detail in the shadows. And, it handled the highlights well. Considering this was shot with a plastic lens, there is also decent amount of contrast.

So when Harman do make films for non-Ilford brands, such as Kentmere and Oriental, they really are making films for them and not just sending them stuff they were already producing anyway. Having now seen the results though, I do rank it higher than the Ilford Pan 400, purely for the lower amount of grain it has. I did find the grain to be middling too; not as dense as Ilford Pan 400 and not as clean as Rollei Retro 400, for example.

ILFOTEC LC29 is a highly concentrated liquid developer. This versatile developer offers a range of dilutions for varied contrast and time. Whether you like the results you get from shooting street photography with Kentmere 400 will come down to personal taste, and I’m certainly not unhappy with how mine turned out. As you can see, I shot a lot of architectural subjects on this roll. I developed the film in HC-110, Dilution B, and scanned the negatives on my Plustek 8200i scanner. Several of my film-photography friends get best results from this film when they develop it a little longer than what the Massive Dev Chart says, so I gave it about an extra minute. The negatives were appropriately dense when they came out of the tank. And here are my results. These results are super surprising to me. For those who watched my first version of this test, these results are extremely different. Part of the reason for this is that this time, I am taking into account things like scannability and price into the equation. But even more than that, I just think I had a better process of development and scanning this time. Dilution 1+1 does not offer this speed increase but gives fine grain negatives with full film speed. ILFOTEC HC Developer

In our recent Global Film Users Survey, 75% of the the 8600+ respondents used 120 format so there are a lot of medium format photographers out there. While all of our ILFORD films are available in this format we wanted to ensure there is choice at different price points. Kentmere Pan 100 and 400 films are not necessarily intended as ‘professional’ films, yet we have seen you can still create exceptional results all professionals would be proud of." Available now The choice of dilution depends on the desired final image results and grain structure. MICROPHEN Developer To get the best results, fresh film that is not expired should be used. Film should also avoid being stored in hot temperatures, that can be found in large distribution centers. The first t-grain film we’ll discuss is Kodak T-MAX and Lady Gray (which is the same film). This film is very linear, tonally. It has very fine grain. The T-grain emulsion, as I mentioned, high sharpness and very high-edged detail. T-MAX is a great choice if you don’t like grain. The T-MAX base has a pink tint to it. Like Rollei Retro, T-MAX is also extremely curly upon drying but is also currently fairly affordable at .15 per frame. If there’s a photography shop near you that sells film, it’s very possible they’ll have Kentmere 400. Remember, it was first produced for the US market and rolled out worldwide afterwards. Search my 200+ videos by lens manufacturer, lens mount, focal length, film format and other filters. Kentmere offers a more classic look from being less perfect (vs. TMax), having more visible grain and lower contrast. Kodak TMax 400 is very modern and smooth looking from the fine T-grain structure. T-Max 400 is the best 400 speed film, especially in 35mm film format in terms of resolving power and look for my taste. That said TMax is so perfect it can look almost digital especially in 120 film format. I do quite like the classic look of film photography so Kentmere 400 will suit my needs in many instances and especially for low light. More Kentmere sample photos
