First broadcast on ITV on 1 May 2011, it stars Brenda Blethyn as the principal character, Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope. At first, the moths seem to be part of the mystery - but Alex's professor, Alan Randle, denies they have any connection to her work. The moths were actually related to the dead man. His name was Martin Neilson, and he lived with his elderly, bed-ridden mother, Kitty. Cursory investigation into Alex and Martin's lives seems to rule out a romantic relationship - Alex, her mother, Vanessa Gartside, reveals, was a lesbian. On the other hand, Martin was fired from his volunteer position at a prison charity for lewd remarks, according to his employers: the Hewarths. His solitary life dominated by his mother and hobby (collecting moths) leads Aiden to suspect Martin is a sexual predator. Weekly Top 10 Programmes: ITV+1 w/e 15 May 2011". In March 2015, ITV announced that the show had been renewed for a sixth series, with filming commencing in June. The third episode was announced to be an adaptation of the novel The Moth Catcher, which was set to be published in September 2015. [9] Noof McEwan joined the cast following the departure of Cush Jumbo. [10] On 14 January 2020, while attending the TCA Press Tour, Blethyn confirmed that Vera was renewed for an eleventh series. Production for series 11 began in April 2020 and new episodes began airing in 2021. [11] In March 2023, ITV had announced that the thirteenth series was renewed with filming commenced in mid-May. It will feature former Hollyoaks actress Rhiannon Clements as DC Stephanie Duncan. [12] Cast [ edit ] Vera is called to the University of Northumberland when Jamie Marshall, a young, promising journalism student, plummets to his death from the top of a disused science building. With no eyewitnesses and no immediate leads, Vera turns to friends and family to glean all she can about Jamie, and to discover who might have wanted him dead. Her investigation delves further into Jamie’s academic and personal life, as it becomes apparent that all is not as it seems. His sunny persona is betrayed by vlog posts that cast Jamie in a different light altogether, with anger and resentment bubbling to the surface. But what was Jamie railing against? She added: "There is such a variety of locations in the area. From places like Corbridge in the Tyne Valley to the Northumberland coastline and many other varied locations. I also like working in the vibrant city of Newcastle which was the main venue for Sally Abbot’s “For The Grace of God”. Series 11 locations Weekly Top 10 Programmes: ITV+1 w/e 3 June 2012". The body of teenager Ethan Dewley is found floating in a reservoir. When Vera and her team discover that Ethan had been missing for three days, they look to a rural timber community for answers.

One of the first sightings of Vera was at a gym in Gateshead - or rather in the snooker hall above Low Fell Life Gym - where Blethyn was inside filming while location vans took up space in its car park. A man, outwardly happily married, is discovered in the river with his shoe laces tied together suggesting suicide until the post mortem confirms murder. The victim was an informant for Revenue and Customs, on a case regarding the smuggling of alcohol which widens the suspects from family to include his business associates. The bus featured in this episode of Vera on a service to Bebington is The Eden's Leyland Leopard, which was new in 1976. Making its appearance as a vehicle still in service in this episode somewhat strange. The bus itself has been painstakingly restored to its former glory.Mod Sheila wrote: "I've got a question about how this discussion works. Do we read a certain # of chapters by a certain date and then comment with spoilers or what? And Brenda has since revealed that scenes were also shot on Holy Island, with popular pub The Ship Inn changing its name to play a key role in the plot.

This case was different from anything Vera had ever worked before. Two bodies, connected but not lying together. And nothing made her feel as alive as murder.Just days after filming in Tynemouth, Blethyn and co-star Doughty had moved on to shoot scenes near some flats in Gateshead then next in South Shields. Vera has to unravel the circumstances of self-styled entrepreneur Freddie Gill's death when his body is found by bailiffs attempting to repossess his house. Those two stories - Vital Signs and Where The Wind Blows, were the first to air Vera's return, each lasting two hours; before the action then moves to series 12, which will bring with it a replacement for Paul Kaye as his character, pathologist Malcolm leaves the show. I don't have any interest in reading any more of Ann Cleeves books because this has been so disturbing to me.

The judging panel consisted of Geoff Bradley (non-voting Chair), Lyn Brown MP (a committee member on the London Libraries service), Frances Gray (an academic who writes about and teaches courses on modern crime fiction), Heather O'Donoghue (academic, linguist, crime fiction reviewer for The Times Literary Supplement, and keen reader of all crime fiction) and Barry Forshaw (reviewer and editor of Crime Time magazine).
