Description

The narrator also went to the same school I went. A school that prided themselves of being one of a kind, yet it failed to properly educate their students. A mentality of competing, of being better than everybody else was nurtured.

Zoo Station, a memoir, succeeds by Oppenheimer’s rubric; its nonfiction approach delivers the familiar narrative of a teen’s progression from “gateway” to “cooler” hardcore drugs without a trace of triteness. To make the most value-free assessment possible, Zest’s editorial and marketing decisions assume that today’s young adult readers are just as if not moresophisticated than the parents of Christiane’s generation. At first all I could think was: "shit." My throat was dry and I felt like I was going to puke. I couldn’t understand how Atze could have overdosed. Atze, of all people—the popular guy, who knew exactly how to handle his heroin. I didn’t want to let my mom see how upset it all made me. She had no idea that I was using again. So I took the paper and went to my room. I understand the narrator’s point that it certainly felt like kids were viewed as the problem, even though they were the victims and just looking for a place to belong. In every quote, we highlight a keyword ( bold) to point out what its matched footnote is about. Diagrams and maps are interactive: mouse over or tap on touch screens. This is an open project.

It was no surprise to see some of my classmates showing up for Latin class smelling like booze and meeting friends of friends that were so high all they could do was shout “moonface” at everyone. What you find here has been done sitting at a desk, in a small town on the shores of a lake, forty years later after the publication of the book. Very far indeed, both in time and in space, from the facts and places narrated.

Atze’s death completely obliterated an impossible dream that we all shared: the dream of the cool junkie, who’s able to handle his heroin. Instead, everyone in Atze’s old crowd began to fear and mistrust each other. Before, when there weren’t enough needles to go around and we were shooting up, everybody wanted to be first. Now all of a sudden, everybody wanted to be second. Nobody talked about how scared they were, but everyone was worried that the stuff would be too pure, too strong, or that it would be cut with strychnine or some other poison. You could die from an overdose, but you could also die from shit that was too pure or too dirty. Overall, I sympathized with the narrator’s struggles, made me extremely thankful for life I have now. I only wish I had read it sooner. I would definitely recommend it to everyone, although I have yet to find an English copy. The David Bowie concert featured in the film actually took place in New York City, with only some of the crew and cast attending, because at the time Bowie was performing on Broadway several nights a week and could not shoot in Berlin. The close-up shots of Bowie were from this New York performance, whereas the mass audience scenes were from an AC/DC concert in Germany. The two were spliced together to seem as one event. YouTube. Google, Inc. Archived from the original on 12 December 2021 . Retrieved 13 July 2013.Consistent with the recent trend in young adult literature that represents adults as either helpless or helplessly corrupt, Christiane describes a family and a community that are incapable of helping those who are young and addicted. This indictment extends to the structures of the German educational system and the private capital interests that shaped her corner of Berlin. Down to the signs posted about the housing project that all but forbid children from playing, her environment fails her. But Christiane’s sense of general disappointment is well tempered by her sense of personal responsibility.
