While most contemporary readers of Alice see little more than a childrens story, Victorian adults may have had a much different experience. Well known for his caricatures in Punch, a popular political magazine, Tenniel satirised political leaders and events. In fact, many scholars claim Alice characters are reminiscent of Tenniel's Punch drawings. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is the best known work of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 – 1898) – better known by his pen name, ‘Lewis Carroll’. Telling the tale of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by surreal and anthropomorphic creatures, the book was a huge commercial success on its initial publication in 1865. The book plays at the heart of logical problems and literary nonsense – giving the narrative lasting popularity with adults and children alike. Monica Edinger in the article " Alice, The Transformer"discusses that Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been illustrated by a steady stream of illustrators. Alice's journey to Wonderland seems never-ending.

Mathematics and logic are central to Alice. [50] As Carroll was a mathematician at Christ Church, it has been suggested that there are many references and mathematical concepts in both this story and Through the Looking-Glass. [51] [52] Literary scholar Melanie Bayley asserts in the New Scientist magazine that Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland in its final form as a satire of mid-19th century mathematics. Changing Images of Alice examines the depiction of Alice in illustrated versions of "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. The primary concern was to determine if the character of Alice had changed historically through the interpretation of different illustrators. Eighteen different illustrators' versions of Alice published between 1965 and 1993 were analyzed. The analysis found that, although the character of Alice was presented differently through time, there were no major changes to the story. Alice was always drawn in a short dress with a pinafore and sash. There have been no new interpretations of the setting since the original illustrations by John Tenniel. This probably reflects that the original illustrations are considered to be a classic that most illustrators do not want to change drastically.
