Found along the path leading to Greenpath. He is held in the mandibles of a Vengefly King, and the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him. If saved, he complains that the Knight got in the way between him and his "prey", he introduces himself and boasts about his supposed mighty deeds. You’re fired! Fired! Get all of your things and get out of my shop! If I ever catch you here again, I swear on Uldar’s beard you’ll wish I called the guards for you!” Master McHarris roared, his face turning beet red. The young wizard nodded, conjuring another horde of monsters. By now, he could feel the staff’s energies beginning to wane, but he wouldn’t need them for much longer.

He tried waving the golem’s flame away with his trident, but suddenly stiffened: realising he was between Claygon and Kyembe. The young wizard’s heart thundered in his chest: Kaz-Mowang’s life draining magic was hitting him hard, fatigue was building, threatening to force him from the fight. His lungs burned. But it says something that those are my two complaints. Author winking at us with insider jokes and the sister not getting enough attention.Fire magic and hellfire wove together, roiling with a life of its own; demons around their master burst into flame. Stone beneath his feet melted, bubbling like lava, his trident wilted like a flower hit by the first frost, metal dripping like candle wax. Ultimately, I'm glad I read it, but also glad I skimmed past the several chapters worth of the main character's thoughts and feelings which leant little if anything to the story. Kyembe glanced at Claygon, then gave Alex a grin dripping with malicious glee. “Simply say the word, my friend.” Dream Wielder allows the Knight to easily gather lots of SOUL for Spells or healing using the Dream Nail. If a slow enemy is saved until the end of a wave, it can be farmed for SOUL, and the Knight can heal to full. If he is not saved before acquiring the Mantis Claw, he dies in this location, with his nail and shell remaining. Hitting his shell here grants the Neglect achievement.

Alex Roth froze in the middle of a disaster: collapsed shelving, shattered eggs and flour dust falling like snow in the middle of the bakery. The young man gave an awkward cough and wiped the white powder from his chestnut brown hair. “Does this mean you won’t be giving me this week’s pay?” And so, to The Fool, Alex simply offered his empathy. He knew well how it was to struggle. Thankfully, those days were at an end.I enjoyed the book, but i've grown very pessimistic about books that originate on Royal Road. Almost every other series i've read from Royal Road has started out ok but then devolves into a platform for liberals to push their agenda instead of a fun story to read during down time. Alex had seen enough of McHarris’ rages to know that he meant it. The young man tore off his apron and scrambled to grab his pay. He sniffed the air near the eggs as he bent: a nasty stench confirmed his suspicions from early this morning. Keeping his face neutral, he jumped up and scuttled for the exit to the front room of the shop.

Mark of the Fool Series by J.M. Clarke - Goodreads

As it passed, Alex spied what he was looking for: two guardsmen sitting on the side of the fountain. They were bleary-eyed from the night watch, and squinted at Alex as he strolled up as light-footed as a pleased cat. I'm also impressed with the world building, and how that's conveyed naturally in passing and not through exposition or cumbersome info dumps. Maybe my favorite installation in this series so far. The fool Is becoming not only powerful in body but also in mind. His process is paced properly and as a reader I’m enjoying watching the growth. The minotaur’s image shattered, as the bolt drove through the pazuzite’s skull. Ripp slipped from limp hands, and the air elementals were there, catching him on cushions of wind. The Fool—according to all Alex’s teachers—had nothing to offer anyone, save for a nominal but necessary service to the Heroes. Uldar’s Prophecies called those that bore the mantle necessary, but history had suggested otherwise. The magic system is also ridiculous. It's an unholy mixture of everything available in the subgenre, from wuxia to LitRPG. And because we've forgotten about our original premise, without the context in which it fits (the other marks) the whole "fool's mark" concept just turns into a very dubious convenience. It never happens. Instead, we get dumped in Hogwarts. That I kept reading is actually a testament to the quality of the writing because for me, magic school is an instant DNF.

To that end, I’ve chosen to leave my completed journal behind, in hopes that another brave explorer might use it to piece together the myriad of mysteries of this forsaken kingdom." The author is clearly talented. The writing, dialogue and ideas are all good. But the pacing after they reach the wizard school is terrible to an extend that almost made me dnf. Following our MC get stronger and better the same way (hard work and a cheat sheet called the Mark) is just boring. All of the characters are robots that just work, work, work. There are no stakes since the Mark will make sure that the MC will overcome everything and, unsurprisingly, a universty and perfect recall is a perfect match. Boring. Using the last of his staff’s magic, he grabbed a piece of waybread from the bag, then cast invisibility on himself and muttered the incantation for Call Through Ice. My only other complaint is that once the MC gets to the magic school part of the story, the little sister kind of vanishes. Sometimes for many chapters at a time. And that was a little bit of a bummer, because her presence very much made this story unique to me. She started popping up a little bit more toward the end, so hopefully that'll continue.

Oh, and don’t try that again. Stupid or not, bribery of a guard’ll get you ten lashes. Understand?” The story literally died right there, and got swapped out for a shapeless slice-of-life tedium of magic system exposition, that I really didn't care for. All in all it's a good story, but bear in mind you are going to learn a lot about student life and jump from feel good slice of life chapters to plot changing ones with no warning.
