There are a lot of ways to get the best 4K HDR picture quality on TV: HDR10, HDR HLG, HDR10+ , HDR DOLBY VISION. This TCL TV supports them all! If this is your first time hearing about quantum dots, they act like a filter between the LEDs and the screen to amplify color saturation. This improves overall contrast and vibrancy, especially when combined with a full array local dimming system.

Watching The Favourite on Blu-ray, the TCL Roku takes a plainer approach to painting colours than the Hisense. Viewing the same scenes, Emma Stone’s complexion is less expressive, the blue of her dress more navy, and her hair less golden, too. This is tech jargon for how long it takes your TV to turn the data it's receiving into an actual image on the screen. The lower the input lag (counted in milliseconds) the better. This means the gaming action will be as up-to-speed as possible, without lagging behind what’s happening on the control pad or your opponent’s screen. What good is it if your trigger and target are out of sync? Milliseconds might not sound like something to worry about, but just 100ms can make a huge difference — making games difficult to play, in fact. What is ALLM? When it comes to 4K, bigger is indeed better. And why not? A bigger screen makes sense when you're looking to get the most out of the 4K quality — and to set these TVs apart from smartphones and small devices, which we increasingly use to watch HD content. The smallest size in 4K is usually 48 inches, going up to 55, 65, 75, and even 80+ inch screens. Screen size is measured diagonally, from corner to corner. What is low input lag? If there’s a silver lining to the 5-Series’ performance, it’s that it only has 11ms of lag and has a game mode that will turn on automatically when you turn on a video game. Combined, these two features certainly help games feel more responsive – something we can attest to after playing several hours of intense UFC 3 matches on the 5-Series – but without HDMI 2.1 and/or 120Hz support, it’s really not a great fit for the Xbox Series X or PS5.It’s also equipped with a “Game Optimiser” menu which allows you to tweak the brightness, contrast, VRR, and other features as you play. LG prides itself on the OLED gaming experience — fluid, responsive, and totally immersive. The all-glass screen isn’t ideal for daytime gaming or bright rooms. The reflection can really interfere with your gameplay. It’s worth considering if this is a deal breaker for you.

The TCL weighs less and looks a little less bulky from behind. The IR receiver/LED indicator below the TV logo blinks to confirm remote control presses or flashes red when the TV encounters an issue, to name but two potential occurrences.

It's a clear upgrade on previous TCL TVs, with a QLED 4K screen — very strong for the budget range. The picture is boosted by Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and other HD formats, which optimises colour and contrast. You do have to bear in the mind, however, that it is ultimately a budget set. It's good but it doesn't compete with more expensive options. But at a fraction of the price, the difference is marginal in the grand scheme of things. There’s support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, if you’re in the iOS ecosystem and want to either share video/audio content or add the TV to your list of smart devices. Alexa and Google digital assistants are covered but support isn’t native – you’ll need an external device to get either of them going. It’s rare that a cheaper TV is anything other than functional in its design and the TCL Roku adheres to that viewpoint. It’s like the Hisense R50A7200GTUK Roku TV, with a few changes. Where straight-up visuals are concerned, the JX940 is powered by HCX Pro AI Processor (the same processor that powers Panasonic’s more expensive OLED sets). This smart bit of tech analyses colour, contrast, and clarity in each image to deliver the best possible quality in every single frame. It’s especially good for lightning-fast action. That goes for games, movies, and sport. Not to mention multi-HD support — Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10, or the new HDR10+. It supports Dolby Atmos too, so the sound quality matches the action. The TCL 5-Series (S535) is priced on the lower end of mid-range, but it certainly doesn’t look like it. With a minimal bezel and metallic frame, the 5-Series should look modern and sleek in any living room.
