There is currently no TB vaccine licenced for use in cattle in the UK. Cattle vaccinated with BCG vaccine are impossible to differentiate from TB-infected cattle using current testing methods. M. bovis is a slow-growing organism that is not easy to culture even in a specialist veterinary laboratory such as APHA (one of only three internationally renowned reference centres for bTB diagnosis and research). It is not always possible to find visible lesions, or culture the bacterium, in infected animals particularly if the lesions are too small to see.
