Description

For most of my life, she was a gynaecologist, specialising in gruesome anecdotes and family planning (my mother is the only Catholic in history to have thrown off her upbringing utterly and never looked back).

Similar to Little House in the Big Woods (which I also read recently), Milly-Molly-Mandy obviously lived a very simple and frugal life without many material comforts, but she did not feel deprived or lacking in anyway, and she was still about to find joy and happiness and small things. None of the stories are moralising, and very few of them present an overtly normative idea of gender. We were on holiday, which was already happiness enough, comprising as it always did two weeks with our beloved grandma in her flat in Preston, eating chip butties under lowering skies. Knowing what “blueing” was came from Ramona doing the laundry in one of Beverly Cleary’s ebullient books. Milly-Molly-Mandy Stories contains thirteen short stories that are wonderful to read aloud and are the perfect way to introduce younger readers to the enduringly popular heroine, not forgetting her friends little-friend-Susan and Billy Blunt! Another reason why I like MMM is that, to modern eyes, the children were all quite mature and independent, probably more so than kids these days - MMM was obviously quite young, but she did chores and ran errands and was thoughful about other people; she had many good qualities but was painted as a normal child rather than someone who was particularly virtuous (phew). the only reason that I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I forced myself to read it quickly, and this is why I didn't really enjoyed reading the Milly-Molly-Mandy Stories as much as I should have, but all the same it was a wonderfull story, and I recommend this book to anyone!

My kids loved this book as a read-aloud, and I appreciated that the stories were all simple and interesting.I am reading these to my little sister at some of her bed times we are trying to get through all four books.

DJ with a half-inch tear at front fold and one-inch crayon mark to front panel, a few spots to rear panel. Their crippling poverty and hunger is hidden at all costs from the little girl, who goes on pleasant little adventures, blind to the pain around her - most of those men were in World War One, they saw things. This is a bright shining look at the past, about loving your family and living at peace with yourself, with your neighbors. The only thing I didn't like: the name "Milly-Molly-Mandy" is SO LONG to read dozens of time per story! I found them genuinely funny as well, although that is partly thanks to my gf who is an excellent reader. I suspect that older children will be bored by Milly-Molly-Mandy, but younger children might like to be read these stories at bedtime.

Milly-Molly-Mandy gets locked in her bedroom by accident and spends the whole day crocheting Doris a bonnet. Taylor took John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and simplified the vocabulary and concepts for young readers, while keeping the storyline intact. Jo had a peculiar sense of something that didn’t seem at all strange to me, so I applied to Dad and he explained that words can change their meanings over time. I haven't read all the stories yet but the ones I have read are filled with warmth, humor and a gentle understanding of children, imparting wisdom and empathy effortlessly and without being obnoxiously preachy. But there is Something™ about the purchasing power of a single penny in ye olden days that Speaks to Me. The era of children's literature of these books produced truly living books, where you can close your eyes and picture you're there just by the amount of vivid descriptions.
