Description

The powerful new novel from the master storyteller - inspired by the true story of one man who might have stopped World War II. The author has not made the the topic of WW2 'depressing' as it can be a sensitive topic to teach however the author has balanced the events in the book quite well. In many ways, it is one of the prettiest books I have ever come across, especially when it comes to books written about WW2. This diary was written by Flossie, in her words, about her time living and growing up during war time.

Suppose that without your noticing, it became dangerous for some people to live in Germany any longer. We need to ensure that children are made aware that not every child’s experience would have been as colourful and adventurous as Flossie’s and certainly not every Jewish refugee would have felt as welcome in wartime Britain as Simon was in this book, nor so lucky to have been reunited with his mother.

One aspect of the book that stands out are the amount of historical facts and references throughout. An incredible armada of over 800 craft, including Royal Navy ships and a flotilla of small river and coastal boats, thereafter known as “the little ships”, was assembled on the south-eastern coast of England. She was nine years old when it began, too busy with her schoolwork and toboganning to take much notice of political posters, but out of them glared the face of Adolf Hitler, the man who would soon change the whole of Europe – starting with her own small life.A sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the care of old Tom Oakley - but his new-found happiness is shattered by a summons from his mother back in London .

The structure of the book makes it very engaging for children to read, it has flaps to open, letters to pull out of envelopes, its very colourful and the font of the text is written as the handwriting of Flossie Albright. As the story unfolds, the journalist begins to understand the full horror of war - and how one group of musicians survived using the only weapon they had.In another study, Agnew and Fox (2001) reported that many older children did follow the war as it unfolded at the time, often plotting troop movements on maps, therefore indicating that this type of diary may have been kept by some children. And so follows the story of his parents in a Jewish concentration camp, forced to play Mozart violin concerti for the enemy; how they watched fellow Jews being led off to their deaths and knew that they were playing for their lives. An examination of Britain's relations with China from the end of the World War II to the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. Rose follows the truck to a desolate place out of town, where she discovers many other children, staring hungrily from behind an electric barbed wire fence.

My Secret War Diary, by Flossie Albright - AbeBooks

The Second World War is an exciting time for a young boy growing up in a small town in Suffolk – sometimes far too exciting! The content is quite comprehensive (though I wish she could have mentioned Canada's contributions too). This particular book follows Madeline a young girl in the United States who experiences life of WWII America while her father is serving in the Navy. This was a fictional diary made by a girl named Flossie Albright, and it takes place during WW2 in England. This is the war diary of 'Flossie Albright' who is a child living away from London with her Uncle, baby brother and for a while her dad (who joins the army). I think it is also important to consider whether such a book is portraying a nostalgic version of Britain during WW2. There were so many creative illustrations and additions that I really thought I was looking at a scrapbook. The writing is made to look handwritten, and since cursive writing was more common during that time the writing is in cursive.
