Description

This last is purely one sonnet, by Wavell, followed by a brief note about that sonnet and a final paragraph by his son ending with a soldier’s poem. On 15 June 1943, Churchill invited Wavell to dinner and offered him the Viceroyalty of India in succession to Linlithgow. Wavell ( not a Lord when he put this collection together in 1943) said in his introduction that the poems were noted down as favourites by him and with the help of his family in reminding him of their favourites he would read and recite for them. He served in the Second Boer War, the Bazar Valley Campaign and the First World War, during which he was wounded in the Second Battle of Ypres. In July 1939, he was named as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Middle East Command with the local rank of full general.

Having fallen back in front of Italian advances from their colonies Libya and Eritrea towards (respectively) Egypt and Ethiopia, Wavell mounted successful offensives into Libya ( Operation Compass) in December 1940 and Eritrea and Ethiopia in January 1941.

In 1961, 11 years after his death, TS Eliot wrote, "I do not pretend to be a judge of Wavell as a soldier .And there is the fractious and fracturing nature of Iraq, a country poised on the brink of division into three parts, just as India was divided into two. We have on our shelves a copy of the attractively produced ‘memorial edition’, put together two years after his death in 1950, with an introduction by his son, also Archibald. Third voice: "No, a timetable would make quitting even more dangerous - there must be no mention of timetables. The family all made their suggestions, and we reminded him of poems we knew he loved but had forgotten to include: the poems that we heard read to us as children .
