One inclusion in the box that I do quite like is the wrist strap. It helps to minimise the risk of the gimbal slipping out your hands and crashing onto the floor below (taking your phone with it), and also lets you carry the gimbal while keeping your actual hand free when needed, too. With the iSteady X, I can shoot using any aspect ratio, resolution and frame rate supported by the camera and get buttery stabilization. This comes in very handy when shooting with the ultra-wide lens, on either phone, since that one does not have any built-in optical stabilization. The improvement in video quality provided by the gimbal is very obvious, even in static handheld shots. I did, however, encounter a few hiccups where double-pressing the power button would not recenter the gimbal. While the stabilisation is generally good, there were a few moments where the motors are slow to respond, and even putting the response speed too fast doesn’t correct this.

The iSteady X has an 8-hour battery life. The 18650 li-ion 2000mAh/3.7v battery doesn’t last as long as the DJI OM4 or Zhiyun Smooth Q2 but is still plenty for most users. There is a slight downside to this design, however, which is that the maximum range of motion in the Y-axis is slightly more limited than the old-fashioned gimbal arm design. In 99% of cases, you won’t be nearing those limits, but it’s worth pointing out. It’s worth noting that part of that set-up is to register a user account through the app. As DJI and most other companies now insist on this, I wasn’t too worried.It’s been a while since I last had need of a smartphone gimbal. When I turned the gimbal for the first time, the stabilization was smoooooth and refined. The defaults are a “just right” setting that gives you the feeling you are guiding the camera where you want it to go, totally intuitively and without any sense of lag. You can “float” your way through any walkable space with this stabilizer and get a great result. I found the iSteady X handles more predictably than other stabilizers, without the annoying drift I’ve experienced with some (many) others I have tried. And with the Hohem Pro app you can fine-tune all the parameters needed to customize the gimbal to your specific needs. Setting up the iSteady X is relatively straightforward. Simply mount your phone by placing it in the clamp, pair with your phone via Bluetooth, and start the auto-calibration procedure from within the Hohem Pro app. One design feature that is well worth noting is the gimbal design is a little unusual. The 3-axis are mounted with a design that leaves plenty of space for the lenses to be used to full effect.The different shooting modes all seem to work quite well, with the exception of the “Fantastic Rotation” for which I don’t really get the point. The Dolly Zoom is cool, but I don’t think it’s a feature that many will use regularly. Perhaps you’ll give it a try because you’ve never done it before, but then forget the feature’s even there. Powering on and connecting the app on the iPhone 11 Pro to the Hohem iSteady X and everything is straightforward. The connection is fast and works, and after an auto-calibration, everything’s ready to go; I’d say about 2-3 minutes for the complete initial set-up.
