In The Housemaid, Freida McFadden accomplishes a feat which I’m prepared to qualify as relatively rare: she makes it difficult to decide who to actually root for. I thought it was going to be the cliché maid falls for the lord of the manor and they have a torrid, steamy affair troupe. The protagonists, even if they are flawed in various ways, are invariably the good guys, while the villains are precisely-identified and written in such a way as to draw our ire towards them, respecting classic conventions. The story is mainly set in present day with Ruby the new housemaid but it does jump back occasionally to her mother Emily.

Yes, it is formulaic but the characters and plot are very good and worth a read if this is a genre you enjoy, as I do.The story begins by introducing us to Millie, making us think she will undoubtedly be the victim fighting back against her insidious aggressor. Ruby’s own connection with this house along with the ongoing events in the home make you keep turning those pages.

Who wouldn't want to work as a housemaid and personal assistant at Highwood Hall, a beautiful stately home in Yorkshire. And even though I liked our edgy main character, I still didn't get *why* she would put up with certain things. Once I realized it was written from the perspective of two different people, I couldn't easily flip back a few pages to re-read them. Millie doesn’t disclose the day’s details concerning Nina, and she and Andrew sleep together in her room.

A young housemaid is starting her new job there and on the down-low, trying to find out what happened to her mother after she disappeared while working at the very same house 20 years ago.
