About this deal

If you don’t have glass paint, use a chalk paint (my choice) or gouache paint. Both provide an opaque finish in just a few coats.

If you want a pattern with tons of inspiration and tutorials, try the versatile Scandinavian Sweeties gnome pattern. From Santa and reindeer and angels to bunnies, this best-selling pattern is popular for a reason with step by step tutorial and video instruction. Put the right sides of the body rectangle together. Sew along the long edge, turn to short side without removing needle and sew one short edge. fold in half (left to right) and you have a piece of material that 4.5 inches wide along the bottom and 7.5 inches high Traditional Scandanavian gnomes (or tomte) are made with lots of plaid fabrics, so make sure you give at least one of your gnomes a cute plaid flannel hat. Striped and geometric fabrics are fun too. I used felt for two of these gnome noses to make them soft and fuzzy. Flannel and fleece make great noses too. Here are some things to remember when you are looking for materials for putting together your personal “gnome kit.”You can also lay a pipe cleaner inside the arm before gluing, making the finished sleeve slightly adjustable.

Combining two stitches into one to reduce the stitch count, used for shaping, narrowing, or creating tips, such as for the gnome’s hat. As for yarn weight, DK, worsted, and bulky are all popular choices, but you can use almost any yarn weight you like. Using a lighter or heavier yarn is an easy way to adjust the size of your amigurumi gnome. The boot pattern for this little gonk is not included in the pattern set–because I’m putting together a set of 10 gnome boot patterns and these will be included. So, look for that to come soon! Come along for today’s creative project as I show you how to make easy DIY gnomes with instructions and a free pattern.Ethnic and Cultural Gnomes: Customize your gnomes to represent various ethnicities and cultures by using different colours and clothing styles inspired by different regions of the world. Practice Basic Stitches: Make sure you’re comfortable with basic crochet stitches like single crochet (sc), increase (inc), and decrease (dec) before attempting a gnome. Practice these stitches on small swatches if needed. Use the sponge dobber to apply a thin coat of chalk paint to the outside surface of the wine bottle, covering it completely but sparsely. Air dry or use a heat gun to speed up the process. Cut a small rectangle of Mongolian fur to make a beard and hot glue this in place on the gnome, at or above the brim of the hat. If you’re making the wee little hanging ornament type of gnome, use the pattern file called “gnome-hats-wee.” Alternately, if you’re making the chunky standalone type of gnome, use the pattern file called “gnome-hats-chunky.” Basically, the wee size is for gnomes about 2-3″ wide whereas the chunky size is for gnomes about 4-5″ wide.

With right sides together, pin or clip the open side of the hat closed, and using a ¼ " seam allowance, sew the opening closed, making sure to reinforce your starting and ending stitches. Tip: I think it looks cute for the hat to cover part of the nose, but it can cover more of the nose or none at all! If you need to drink a bottle of wine (no judgement here) or gather up some supplies, save this to a DIY pin board or share it on Facebook. Either will make this easy to find when you’re ready to begin and I thank you for the share. Any style of bottle will work for this wine bottle gnome craft – short, tall, thin, wide – anything!Filling: To stuff the gnome’s body and hat, you’ll need filling material. Polyester fiberfill is commonly used for amigurumi projects like crochet gnomes. It provides a soft and pliable texture, giving your gnome a nice shape. optional – doll making pellets, fish tank gravel, or rice to add some weight to the bottom of the gnome body. Either using a glue gun or by hand sewing, attach the arms. Next, attach the beard and the boot trim. I strongly suggest using a glue gun for this, so it stays strongly attached. Next, attach the hat and nose. a pom pom for the end of the hat (mine are 2 1/2”). If you do not wish to make your own, store bought pom poms are also available.

See the Gnome Books here. Buy more and save, or you can buy them individually too. Halloween Gnomes Pin the hat right-sides together and trim off the half inch of the brim (a small triangle) and the top half inch at the tip (a small triangle). If you opt for a brim, on the wrong side of the fabric, fold up the bottom of the hat a half inch and pin in place to sew.
