UPS power supply applications normally use the VRLA AGM type because of its lower internal resistance, high specific power and efficiency, low self-discharge and lower purchasing cost. AGM uninterruptible power supplies batteries also charge faster and can deliver a high current of short duration. Flooded LA UPS batteries Do you need to add water to flooded lead acid batteries? Almost everyone with a mobile phone has become accustomed to the features and benefits offered by lithium-ion battery sets. Older handsets are often sold-on to the second-user market and if a battery requires recycling it is important to place this in the correct waste stream and to consider the battery as general waste. At StorageReview, we are leveraging the Eaton 9PX lithium-ion UPS in a small server room. In the field, this unit would be perfect for a small retail location or perhaps a bank, where the goal is to ensure uptime and resilience for key systems. Depending on the use case, this could be something like point-of-sale and access control systems. Sizing is key, but our little unit can hold up a few servers, storage, and switching in the event of a temporary unplanned outage. Cabinet Height: The LG cabinet is 95" (241 cm) tall as shipped. Since the batteries are not installed, the cabinet may be moved laying horizontally. Plan for moving this 225 lb (102 kg) cabinet through doors, onto small lifts, and note ceiling heights where the cabinet(s) will be placed. Remember that conduit will land on top of the conduit box on top of this 100.5" (255 cm) tall cabinet. Commercial/industrial ceiling heights are often 120" (305 cm), but not always. Re-Charge Speed: Charging either a li-ion or lead-acid battery to 80% takes roughly the same amount of time. But li-ion systems do have an advantage beyond that charge capacity. Reaching a 100% state of charge for lead acid batteries can take more than five to ten hours, while a li-ion battery can reach that state in 30 minutes to an hour.Eaton has expanded their 9PX UPS line with another Lithium-ion offering. The new 9PX6K-L model is a 6 kVA addition to the Lithium-Ion offerings within the 9PX family. Previously, the Lithium-ion models within the 9PX family only went up to 3 kVA, but the new model delivers a capacity of 6 kVA. Lead acid batteries are exothermic on recharge and give out heat when charging as the cells generate heat from the chemical reaction going on inside them. Thermal runway is unlikely in a lead acid battery and the primary flammable material (the plastic case) can be made from flame retardant materials complying to BS6290 Part 4. The first point to note is that not all UPS manufacturers offer lithium-ion powered UPS systems. Those that do provide limited offers in their UPS ranges. For example, a UPS manufacturer may offer smaller single-phase UPS up to 2-3kVA with lead acid or lithium-ion battery options. These are specific UPS systems designed to work with the respective battery technology and they are not interchangeable. The reason being the unique charging and management characteristics of each type of battery. Prices will also be different with a 20-30% premium being charged for lithium, whether the UPS is an online, line interactive or standby system. With larger sets this can mean the installation of a sizeable battery within a server room or data centre and if the battery is lead acid, fire suppression should be a key consideration in a risk assessment. If thermal runway were experienced this could lead to fire in the room and the need to evacuate safely and suppress the fire. In addition to a fire suppression system, placing the UPS system and lithium battery set in a separate UPS room that can provide containment of any such and rare issue could help to further reduce the impact of such an event. This Unit allows users to utilize onboard and external management interfaces like IPM2, VPM, and PredictPulse Insight. Refresh charge to ensure all batteries in each string are properly voltage-balanced and within limits (this may require several hours of charging). Note that batteries will have been reduced to 30 percent SOC during shipment. A single cabinet configuration of 34.6 kWh comprises one switchgear, one switched mode power supply (SMPS) and 17 battery modules.

When you switch the unit into high-efficiency mode though, the UPS is able to save a bit on power as it’s not always flowing energy through the inverter. The tradeoff for these power-savings is you will need to handle some amount of switchover time. We used the Quarch IEC Mains Power Analysis Module to monitor the voltage output from the Eaton 9PX6K-L during a brief power interruption. Total Cost of Ownership: For UPS systems, lithium-ion batteries are generally more expensive than lead-acid batteries, although those costs are falling. The real advantage for li-ion systems is in their lifespan. Over a 15-year period, lead-acid-based systems would need to be replaced two or three times, while li-ion systems may not need replacement at all. Flipping it around, on the right side are two sets of 5-15R load segment outlets in two groups, four total. Moving to the left are four 5-15R managed outlets. Next to them is the EBM connector and a ground bonding screw. Continuing on our leftward journey, we see the output relay port with the external battery module detection port under it. Both are immersed in a liquid electrolyte made of lithium salt and organic solvent. Switchgear collects all information about each battery cell and controls all battery module management systems calculating state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH). It also contains a moulded case circuit breaker and a shunt resistor.

VPM allows the remote monitoring of the power of up to thousands of PDU and UPS device. This is done through an intuitive GUI. VPM is vendor agnostic. The software alerts for when devices need to be replaced proactively versus reactively. And VPM can deliver real-time analytics so admins know what is going on with power in their facility. Life Span: The average life span of a VRLA battery is 4-6 years in ideal conditions. N1C Li-Ion battery life span is 10-15 year in nearly all conditions. Long life With IPM2, we actually did a fairly deep dive of IPM a few years ago. IPM2 is all about managing and monitoring power devices in both physical and virtualized environments. The software gives admins alerts if something goes wrong, but better yet, IPM2 leverages automation to fix things. If something goes wrong, IPM2 gives users lots of ways to correct them. LA UPS batteries use an electrolyte comprising water and sulphuric acid, and plates made up of sponge lead (negative electrode) and lead oxide (positive). The two main LA uninterruptible power supply battery types are VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) also known as ‘sealed’ or ‘maintenance-free’ and flooded LA batteries, also called ‘vented’ or ‘open’.
