About this deal

Fractal’s relatively late to the RGB game, having introduced their Prisma fans only in 2019, but we’re glad they came around eventually. Other fans that fought their way to the front are the Seasonic MagFlow 1225 PWM, which was in the middle of the pack in other tests, and the Alphacool Aurora Rise, which is by far the loudest fan in the test, however. Thanks to an alloy/lubricant combination developed in Germany, friction within the bearing is reduced and greater efficiency is achieved. This means that at equal noise levels, you will achieve lower cooling performance, and it doesn’t really matter what fan you use.

This is because the air streams do not break away from the blade tips as they do with “normal” fans. Normally I would find the silver screws unattractive, but, this particular fan is white, so it should be fine. Like the EK and Enermax fans, the Prisma AL-14/PWM connects to your motherboard via a 3-pin ARGB header, saving you from having to spend extra on a controller. Once again, the Cooler Master Mobius 120 sits at the top alongside the MSI Silent Gale P12, and in the budget range, the DeepCool fans still do very well. The semi-transparent blades pick up and diffuse the lighting from the rings and central hub, creating stunning lighting effects once you have everything up and running. It’s not too bad, though, and if you’re rocking thick radiators in a custom water-cooling loop, the EK-Vardar EVO 120ER is a solid choice. mm-H2O rating of the EVO 120ER makes it the perfect 120 mm RGB fan for radiators and filtered intakes. In other words, you’ll only be able to appreciate the Aer RGB 2’s lighting effects when they’re used as exhaust fans.

The misinterpretation of PWM that Noctua mentions is that the fan operation may not correspond to the set PWM duty cycle ( we have discussed this in more detail in this article, where we also discuss the key features of the new Noctua NA-FH1 hub).

If the focus is on the case fans being as inconspicuous as possible and the performance should still be right, this test is the interesting part. It’s only at the level of really fine detail that you’ll find that the P12 has slightly looser manufacturing tolerances than Arctic fans with a similar rotor. Like graphics card fans, the EVO 120ER can be configured to stop spinning below specific temperatures. We have very few of these in comparison and maybe less than half a year left until the release of Noctua 140mm LCP fans.

There will be a tiny unevenness here and there on the P12, but it will have virtually no impact on the performance. In these two areas, the Arctic P12 Max, which seems almost identical in terms of design, pull away noticeably. The Arctic F12s unfortunately don’t quite make the cut of their 140mm sisters and lose out significantly to the P12 models. It will help answer the question “By how much does bearing influence characteristics of the fan other than the bearing noise?

The P12 has a half centimeter narrower tunnel, so the rotor is closer to the obstacle, which changes the airflow velocity in addition to the noise.
