The first English version was published in 1970 and was translated from the original German by Rudolf Herz. Since it was first published in Germany in 1936, Ernst Neufert′s handbook has been progressively revised and updated through 35 editions and many translations. The book is conceived to help the initial design of buildings by providing extensive information about spatial requirements.Organised largely by building type, it covers the full range of preliminary considerations, and with over 6200 diagrams it provides a mass of data on spatial requirements.

In the US, it competes with the most common Architectural Graphic Standards and is little known compared to Germany. The book also includes an extensive bibliography and detailed set of metric/imperial conversion tables. There are additional sections on building components, services and building physics, fire protection, and designing for the disabled.During my studies I discovered this book by accident, and ever since it became part of my architecture bibles! It also looks at the design styles and specifications for creating different types of structures, such as those made for residential, commercial, religious, cultural, sports, medical and other types of occupation. Architects' Data ( German: Bauentwurfslehre), also simply known as the Neufert, is a reference book for spatial requirements in building design and site planning. It may lack a couple of dimensioning sets, but then again this is not an issue, because simply enough you can get anything you need by just combining dimensions from each section.
