About this deal

I am of the belief that that if you want to do one simple thing to make food fun and to make the recipient smile, that one thing is to add eyes. Eyes in unexpected places are funny, they just are! At this time of year eyes or eyeballs can also add a creepy element to Halloween food. Over the last few weeks I have posted several new edible eyeball ideas here on the Eats Amazing blog - as I said before, I started brainstorming and couldn't stop! In today's post I'm going to gather them all up in one place, and add a few final eye themed food ideas for good measure. A double boiler uses a small amount of water in a small saucepan/pot, with a larger glass or metal bowl on top. The boiling water will heat up the bowl slowly, so that chocolate can be easily melted in the top bowl, with no danger of burning. It’s the easiest way to melt chocolate, especially for those of us that struggle to melt chocolate in the microwave.

Once you have piped out as many eyes as you'd like, or your hand aches too much to hold the bottle any more, put the trays somewhere safe to dry. I left mine overnight, and they were dried out nicely ready for the next step the next morning. Starch – Cornstarch (corn flour in the UK) is cheap and accessible. I’ve also made these with tapioca starch. Tapioca is a great option if you’d like a grain free option.

Cheddar Cheese Eyes - One of the most simple ways to add edible eyes to a sandwich or other savoury food is to cut ovals or circles from cheddar cheese (or other hard cheese) using mini bento cutters and dot them with food colouring or an edible marker pen. For full details of the spider bread roll below see the original blog post here. Caramel syrup: I used normal ice cream caramel syrup, but you can use whatever type of caramel sauce you might have on hand. Start out by whisking together the sugar, starch, water and extracts (if using). Mix together into a smooth icing. The chocolate will start melting relatively fast once it’s at room temperature. Place it on cold plates, or make sure it is in a relatively cool place, as you are serving.

You first make a royal icing by whisking egg white and icing sugar really well with a hand mixer. It should be whipped until they form soft peaks and become a little chewy. Then you can adjust the consistency with a little water so that it becomes so soft that it can be piped out and make a smooth hemisphere without making peaks on the surface. It is not difficult to make edible eyeballs themselves, and the cubs can also help make their own eyes for the cakes if they like. It’s only the imagination that sets the limit on what they should look like. Reese’s: Substitute Reese’s Pieces instead to skip the need to chop up the cups. This can be especially helpful if you have an issue with melty Reese’s cups and don’t have time to cool or freeze them to make them easier to chop. Let Them Dry– These candy monster eyeballs will need to dry for a full 24 hours before they’ll be ready to use.Portion out a couple of tablespoons worth of the icing mixture and add to a small mixing bowl. Add the cocoa powder or food colouring to the small bowl and combine to create the pupil colour. Once done – leave your googly eyes out to dry (about 24 hours). You can leave them in the fridge or at room temperature. The longer they are left out the harder they will get.
