About this deal

Spaten’s long history and adherence to German brewing standards contribute to its exceptional taste.

Spaten has played a pivotal part in Oktoberfest over the years, being the first of the big six to brew an amber Marzen style beer, thus birthing the idea of brewing a special beer specifically for the festival. More recently, since 1950, the Mayor of Munich has personally tapped the first keg of beer in the Schottenhamel tent, which marks the beginning of Oktoberfest. The onlookers and citizens of Munich judge the Mayor on his ability to strike the cask as they see it as a good judge of character and whether he is a good fit to his role as Mayor. Yes, Spaten beer is available in the United States. You can find Spaten Premium Lager, as well as other Spaten products, at various retailers and online stores. Who owns Spaten brewery? Festbier— Sierra Nevada does Oktoberfests differently. For the past nine years (minus a two- to three-year break during COVID), one of the most iconic breweries in the world teamed up with a different German brewery, collabing on an Oktoberfest that bridges continents. Sierra Nevada keeps things fresh by changing its Oktoberfest release each year, including collaborations with German breweries. In 2023, Sierra Nevada collaborated with Kehrwieder brewery in Hamburg. Elsewhere’s version of an Oktoberfest is just super balanced and beautiful. And to us that is what the Oktoberfest style should be all about. No fuss, no muss, just the good stuff. It’s a quite sad day for me today,” said Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter, “several hearts are beating in my chest.” The fact that the Wiesn 2020 cannot take place is “a bitter pill to swallow”, not only because of the many Munich residents and Bavarians who love their Oktoberfest so much but of course also because of its economic significance for the city of Munich. The decision had not been taken lightly, but they no longer wanted to give the population hope. “We hope that next year we can make it up together!” Today, the festival attracts, on average, six million visitors a year, canceled only twice because of global pandemics, literally (once for cholera and, of course, more recently for COVID-19). It was one of my first forays into craft beer and I will never forget that slightly amber, slightly malty, slightly hoppy beer. Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen Aecht Schlenkerla

Märzens– German amber lagers typically anywhere from chestnut to russet in color. Smooth, toasty, bready, slightly spiced with a bit of a Noble hop bite, Märzens hit around 5-6% ABV with a dry finish. First brewed by Spaten in Germany, in America this is the most common style of what we’ve come to call Oktoberfest or Oktoberfest-style beers. In 2010, the brewery employed 500 workers and had an annual production volume of approximately 2.4million hectolitres (2,000,000 USbbl), [5] making it one of the largest breweries in Bavaria. To ensure that you have access to Spaten beer, it’s important to stay informed about their distribution updates and consult your local sales representative for availability. By doing so, you can continue to enjoy the premium taste of Munich in your own home or local establishments. Food Pairings Märzen— Left Hand’s Oktoberfest starts with Munich and two-row malt as a base before getting hopped with Apollo and Mt. Hood. The resulting copper lager has lovely notes of baked pretzel and bread crust with just a zing of Noble hoppiness. Below are the tasting notes I took while drinking Spaten Oktoberfest. If you’ve tasted this beer or you’re drinking one now as you read this review, please share your thoughts or tasting notes with everyone down in the comments below. Pour and Aroma:

One of the beers most commonly associated with Oktoberfest is Märzen. This amber coloured, medium-bodied lager is malty in flavour with roasted caramel characteristics. It has a clean, crisp finish with an ABV of approx 6%. Festbiers, a golden German lager similar to a helles but a bit maltier and meatier, hitting around 6-6.5% ABV. Festbiers were first pioneered by Paulaner. Today, in Germany, Festbier is THE official beer of Oktoberfest. Basically, the Oktoberfest-style beers brewed in America are actually nothing like the Festbiers made for the real Oktoberfest in Germany. Instead, they align more closely with the original styles served in the 1870s.

But, wait! Don’t go running off all gung-ho, thinking you’ll get a chance to drink the authentic original Marzën style at this years Oktoberfest celebration in Munich. Sorry to say, but this beer won’t make the meadow, and hasn’t in about 15 years. The only beer style served at any of the Oktoberfest tents these days is examples of the modern, and much lighter, Festbier. While other lagers will be available as a part of its “lager service,” Small-Tober will be the main feature. A creamy foam almost like melted ice cream burst with a light floral, buttery biscuit on the nose. But dig underneath the delicate head and you’ll discover a clean, crisp Oktoberfest-style beer that’s not over the top or too fancy. Then, in 1817, Gabriel Sedlmayr bought the brewery. It was Gabriel’s son, Gabriel II, who created what we know as the modern Marzën / Oktoberfest style. In a joint declaration, Bavaria’s Minister-President Markus Söder and Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter decided: The risk for the people is too high to let the Wiesn 2020 take place. “It is about the biggest and most beautiful festival in the world”, said Söder, “We are living in different times. And living with Corona means living carefully. The greatest sensitivity applies to celebrations.”

Spaten is available internationally, allowing beer lovers everywhere to enjoy its distinct, authentic flavors. History of Spaten Brewery

History [ edit ] Beer carriage at the Oktoberfest folk costume procession in 2006 A glass of Franziskaner Weissbier The Spaten-Löwenbräu-Gruppe was sold in 2003 to Interbrew for 530 million euros. During the 2002/2003 brewing year, the Franziskaner beer alone reached one million hectoliters produced. [2] Funny story, just as the original Oktoberfest started with a wedding, Waddle similarly began with the wedding of one Off Color employee. Throughout its history, Spaten Brewery has maintained its commitment to brewing high-quality German beers that embody the essence of Bavarian beer-making tradition. As you continue to explore the fascinating world of beer, Spaten München remains a key player with its iconic products and storied past. Spaten Beer Types and Styles At 6%, this is a stronger brew than Lowenbrau Original and appears a pale yellow in colour with a white head. Sweet malts on the nose with notes of caramel and grain complete the aroma. This medium-bodied beer has a malt taste with a hint of hop bitterness as well as mild spice flavours. The strength of the brew ensures lasting warmth in the finish. Served slightly chilled in a Stein glass if possible, but you do not need to go out of your way and get a German pretzel to enjoy this easy-drinking beverage, it is refreshing and satisfies just on its own.
