About this deal

This is the third book in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series that I have read and it is the second in the series. It is a stretch to compare the two, but the character has captivated me enough to make Gamache my next long running detective series. Even the revelation that she's intelligent, cunning, and desperate enough to have arranged her mother's ingenious murder is shown hand-in-hand with a portrayal of her in a catatonic fantasy not altogether different from CC's own narcissistic delusions.

Her underarms bulged and flopped and the rolls of her waist made the skintight dress look like a melting strawberry ice cream. I couldn’t figure out how Elle knew about Clara’s work, to tell Clara, “I’ve always loved your work Clara”. As for Nichol being somewhat akin to the Hadley House, as you wrote in your post, I’m not quite sure what you mean. Gamache is a chief inspector in the Sûreté du Québec, an honorable and complex character whose main approach to solving a murder is to listen.

This', she sliced her book violently in the air like an ancient mythical hammer, heading for an unforgiving anvil, 'will teach people how to find happiness. De boeken staan op zichzelf, maar in volgorde gelezen ontplooien de karakters zich door de tijd heen en mis je ook toespelingen naar voorgaande boeken niet. I think ten years ago I would have fallen in love with this series, because the lies it tells about doing good and doing evil are told in such pretty prose, with all the symbols of cosiness -- wood fires and snowfall, old friends gathering around candlelit tables, poetry and music and books.

In the Sunday New York Times magazine (June 15, 2014), Hilary Clinton is quoted as saying she has a Louise Penny on her bedside table. A Fatal Grace is the second book I've read in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series and I'm ready for the next book. Although I am well behind many in reading Louise Penny’s series, i enjoyed my first visit to Three Pines making this an easy choice for vacation reading. She and her handsome husband, Peter, have been starving artists in Three Pines for years, although his precisely detailed paintings have finally started to sell.

So much more comforting to see bad in others; gives us all sorts of excuses for our own bad behavior.

There's nothing wrong with magical realism, but I felt like Three Pines and its residents had enough every day magic without resorting to the truly far out there.Sitting at the front of the crowd, the victim stands up, touches the chair in front of her and is promptly electrocuted. I am not sure how many times I’ve read A Fatal Grace , but I still find it as extraordinary as I did back in 2006. A Fatal Grace is the 2nd in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamach series by Louise Penny and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
