About this deal

As I read this book, I was very much reminded of the character of Buccmaster from Paul Kingsnorth’s _The Wake_. from the point of view of a man, a soldier in that time – knowing that she was going to have to show his view of the war etc but 2.

As for the characters, Jacob Cullen has got to be one of the most memorable protagonists I have come across in a long time. It is beautiful and frightening - terrifying, in some places - but captivating and startlingly erotic. He pulls a knife on the man who will become his lover in London, where he nearly succeeds in raping him too.Set against the backdrop of the English Civil War, it's got murder, madness, an obsessive yet passionate relationship between two very different men and a dangerous yet strangely charismatic antihero who could easily rival Heathcliff. Maria McCann was born in Liverpool in 1956 and spent most of her childhood there devouring novels at every opportunity. I could not put this book down, until I realized it was almost over, and then tried to delay finishing it. We end with that well-established device, the protagonist standing on the quay waiting for embarkation to the New World.

never mind the taste of ashes left in the mouth after the meal is over; that is soon forgotten in the yearning to again consume the dish and recapture its flavor once more. I felt so many emotions reading this, hate, disgust, pity and sadness at both of the main characters, but mostly sickening fright for Jacob's rage.

As Meat loves Salt tells the story of Jacob Cullen, a young man living in the 17th century during the English Civil War. Alas, it is ultimately a guilt that is fruitless as he proves himself to be unwilling, or unable, to listen to the better angels of his nature and instead embraces his inner demons. Meat Loves Salt_ is a compelling piece of historical fiction and while the plot, setting, and style of this book are all great, I would say that where it really shines is as a thought-provoking character study. As I said above, I'll need some time to think about it but there are indeed many questions marks and dots to be joined for me. this is the kind of book worth missing a subway stop for; and another book i have had for at least five years without picking up.

Maria McCann and her irresistible narration and beautifully rendered characters made AMLS a full package. And in the character of Jacob himself, a strong but selfish man weakened by a violent temper and haunted by guilty dreams, McCann shows the imaginative empathy that is the hallmark of a true novelist. Jacob relates “everything he had told me as we lay together the night before: all about our first meeting, how I had at once wounded him, how when I stripped by the fire he could scarce breathe for delight”. I questioned his true ideals when he visited if he really was about sharing and brotherly love, why not help Becca at all when she was so tired, why only at the colony when it's all under his control. Our ‘hero’ Jacob Cullen, from whose internal point of view we follow the narrative events, is, to put it mildly, a troubled man. Maria strikes the perfect balance with her extensive knowledge of the customs and lifestyles of the people in that era of England. In response to Lains comment – I think that whether or not they died is unknown to us, because it’s unknown to Jacob. out of 10) As Meat Loves Salt combines two of my all-time favorite things in the entire world: Gritty historical fiction and well-written homoerotica.
