About this deal

We loved testing the Dyson Outsize, and think it's the perfect amped-up Dyson to take on the mess of a family home. That said, it uses the same 1200W suction motor, resulting in a similarly great overall debris pickup. There are three speeds, lights on the front so you can see clearly what you’re cleaning up, and anti-hair wrap technology – essential if anybody in your house has long hair. Yes, it has some limitations – I’d certainly want to invest in a spare roller – but I think anyone with hard flooring will appreciate the HF3’s particular skill-set.

The Shark IZ320UKT is a cordless vacuum cleaner with clout and could easily be the only vacuum you need for your entire house. Accessories are included, and there’s a pet tool that’s useful for cleaning upholstery even if you don’t have pets, as well as an anti-allergen brush. The Dyson Gen5detect is the successor to the Dyson V15 Detect and boasts a higher advertised power figure of 262 AW.

While I love a cordless vacuum for whizzing around the house daily, I like having the Sebo for weekend deep cleaning. Our reviewer Molly lives in a two-bedroom flat, and never found the cord to be an issue, with space to get to all of the rooms she needed to. It has S-class filtration, a European rating system even more demanding than HEPA standards, meaning it filters out 99.

It really is the fine details that make a vacuum better to use, which is why you can't overlook the magic of a Dyson bin mechanism. It does, however, have a smaller dust tank than other picks on this list, and is a little less heavy-duty than large homes may need. If you're looking for a stick vacuum that costs significantly less and still exerts a fairly strong suction force, the Samsung Jet 75 is worth considering. The Dyson Gen5outsize/Gen5outsize Absolute is effectively an enlarged version of the Gen5detect/Gen5detect Absolute. These days, you can get suction as effective as a corded device; battery life of up to an hour; and a whole host of attachments for versatile cleaning – but you do have to pay a little more to do so. Wet and dry vacuums are a relatively new thing, but if anyone knows how to do it right it’s carpet-cleaning experts Bissell. The LED display shows the remaining run time, and whether you’re in auto or manual mode – auto adjusts the suction power as required so you get the longest run time from the battery. However, because they’re lightweight, it’s usually a simple matter to unclip the bin and empty it into your outside dustbin, and even the smallest capacity cleaner should be able to hold the vacuumed contents of several rooms before emptying.

This bendiness also makes for compact storage, which could be an added bonus if space is limited in your home. It has a solid range of attachments, including an upholstery tool that cleans pet hair on fabric surfaces and a fine-bristle dusting brush for delicate surfaces. It’s especially efficient on the boost setting, though that setting is noisy and goes through the battery in around 12 minutes. If that's a problem, the Miele Triflex HX1 is a good alternative that's easier to maneuver on plush carpeting, though it has a shorter battery life and a much smaller dustbin that'll need frequent emptying. We also conducted a ‘flour test’ on a grey rug, spilling flour and then hoovering it up to test performance (you can see one result above). Given it’s one of the most affordable cordless devices on the market - and that it’s so light - we think it is really great value for money. There’s no getting around the fact that this vacuum is bulky, heavy and noisy but that’s the way with most upright vacuums. When we first started using it to clean, we noticed how smooth it is to use on wooden floors - it simply glides along.
