About this deal

If you take the tiles, you place as many of them as you can on a single window on your board (unused tiles break, costing you points at the end of the game), and move your glazier to that window. For me, there is a certain elegance about the original game that gets lost in the machinations of moving tiles here and there in this version. You will bring one of those tiles that you have used in that window down to your player board and place it on the spot that reminds you to flip that window over, there are reasons you would pick one color or another and we’ll cover that in final scoring. In this version, players can expect to discover new artwork and components, including translucent window pane pieces, a tower to hold discarded glass panes, and double-sided player boards, and many other new additions.

Sintra is more interesting for me, because of the intricacies of the scoring rules and the tension between working on the left-most columns (because it’s more efficient) or completing the right-most columns early (because that lets you score them multiple times). To Advance a Pattern, the player takes all Pane Pieces of one colour from either a Factory or from the centre of the table. As a tile-laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora (by Michael Kiesling). When you select Panes from a Factory, all of the leftover Panes are sent to the center area with the 1st Player Tile.Created by Michael Kiesling, Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra challenges players to carefully select glass panes to complete their windows while being careful not to damage or waste supplies in the process. The first time a player takes tiles from the middle, she takes the first player tile along with those she selected. Illustrated by Chris Quilliams, players can expect to discover all new unique art and components in Azul : Stained Glass of Sintra including all new translucent window pane pieces, a tower to hold discarded glass panes, double sided player boards and window pane panels, in addition to many other beautiful components! At the start of the game a number of Factories (circular disks) depending upon the number of players are put out in a circle in the centre of the table. That said, I recommend first-time players start with the original game before diving into the sequel, just for the sake of getting comfortable with the core system.

As members of an elite disease control team in the Pandemic board game, you must keep four deadly diseases at bay. The Pattern Strips each show a column of 5 coloured spaces on which Pane Pieces will be placed during the game. Your choice of panel is indicated by a glazier token, and you can only place glass into the panel your glazier is currently working on, or a panel to the RIGHT of that panel.

Created by Michael Kiesling, Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra challenges players to carefully select glass panes to complete their windows while being careful not to damage or waste supplies in the process. Questa è la seconda uscita, Azul le vetrate di sintra, gli ho acquistato tutti e tre e sono unici nel loro genere. Tiles must be placed on a spot of a matching colour and any extra tiles will be wasted, resulting in a deduction of points.

Each player chooses a colour and takes the appropriate Player Board together with the 8 Pattern Strips. At the end of the game, players will subtract points from their scores based on where their markers sits on the track. At the end of the game you will lose points based on how far down that track you go, from 0 to -18 points. You’ll now select 1 Color Pane Tile of each color, shuffle them, and place them one at a time on the round indicator, starting on Round II. Sintra is an absolutely beautiful game, where Azul pieces were often compared to Starbursts, you can probably best compare the glass pieces to Halls cough drops, colorful and translucent. If they don’t need one of them, draft the other now as the second color will most likely still be there the next turn. When a player takes tiles, she must place them all into a single column, on matching-colored spaces. To set up the game, a number of circular displays are placed in the middle, and 4 colored tiles begin on each. I am happy for both games to reside in my collection and I would choose to play Sintra as it breathes new life into the Azul game which was one of my most played games from 2017.

It is this artwork that was captured in the original Azul game using tiles and has been carried through to the glass of the follow-up game, Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra. It may be the best selling board game of the last few years, with Next Move/Plan B reporting sales of above 325,000 copies even before that red SdJ Pommel was placed on the box. Any player can decide to draft Panes from the center on their turn (eventually it may be your only option).
