About this deal

The thing I would pick up on as most likely to cause problems to modern readers is all the assumed knowledge of France of that period, the wars of religion, the regions, the social structure (eg what it meant to be a "gentleman") and names of the powerful families and so on.

An enjoyable historical romance set in France at the time of Henri IV of Navarre future king of France. The publisher has plainly taken out-of-copyright books and sought, with a minimum of effort, to make a buck. With his eloquent and extraordinary use of language, he painted a vivid picture of life and human emotion. The word gentleman as an index of rank had already become of doubtful value before the great political and social changes of the 19th century gave to it a wider and essentially higher significance. Weyman actually matched or even surpassed “A Gentleman of France,” in 1894’s “ Under the Red Robe,” which features a highly ambivalent antihero, the 17th-century gambler and swordsman nicknamed The Black Death.

With the growth of trade and the Industrial Revolution from 1700 to 1900, the term widened to include men of the urban professional classes: lawyers, doctors and even merchants. Available as an art print on canvas, photo paper, watercolor board, uncoated paper or Japanese paper. However, his loyalty is tested when he falls in love with the Duke's sister, Marguerite de Valois, who is also the wife of the Catholic King Henry III.
