About this deal

The aroma is spicy and sweet with melted salted butter on granary toast, toasty oak and a touch of rye with a caramel sweetness on the nose. In the midst of a industry-wide rush to sell, barrels that had hardly been aged were utilised and quality was often the casualty. We had been training the 206th Engineer Battalion and when the day was over, we’d go find a local place to eat. Created to represent whiskey before it was mass produced, Knob Creek embodies the look, feel and taste of pre-prohibition bourbon. Knob Creek is a small batch bourbon produced by Jim Beam and is distilled in a more traditional form and matured for nine years.

Tilting the glass at a slightly different angle presents a completely different aromatic profile, with the aforementioned nuts (more like cashews than peanuts, though), as well as the rich and spicy meatiness of roasted pork seasoned with an ancho chili rub. Part of a whiskey journey is discovering that different distilleries produce bourbons that have a distinct “profile” or set of aromas and flavors.Thankfully, Jim Beam found a way to overcome its inventory shortages and has been able to reintroduce the 9 year age statement. Even when first encountering the aroma you’ll get that mix of spice and sweetness, with granary toast melding with toasty oak and a spicy touch of rye.

Sazerac made moves to remove Eagle Rare’s 10 year age statement (by putting it on the rear label temporarily) and demoted Very Old Barton 6 Year Old Bottled in Bond to an NAS, 100 proof version. It comes to us at 100 proof (50% ABV), so: not a scorcher, but it’s got noticeably more “oomph” than something in the low-80s. Comments: The current cuvee is based on the 2008 vintage with 14% reserve wines from 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005.
